Eco-tips for Students

Recycling

  • Recycle notebooks, paper, pencils, etc. from the previous semester. If you have to buy new school supplies, buy products made from recycled material.
  • Recycle on campus. Read the labels on the bins.

*According to greenliving.lovetoknow.com, every ton of recycled paper made from recycled material saves 17 trees!

Shopping

  • Bring cloth bags to use at the grocery store or anytime shopping.
  • Shop at second hand stores.
  • Bring a mug to school for coffee (most vendors will give a discount for this!!).

Lowering Car Emissions

  • Take the bus to South Campus instead of driving there.
  • Eat at restaurants in town you can walk to.

*According to terrapass.com, a website that sells products to reduce carbon dioxide, the average US car averages 19.8 mpg and drives 12,000 miles each year.  Go to: http://www.terrapass.com/road/carbon-emissions-calculator.php to find out how much emission your car gives off in a year.

Energy Conservation

  • Start by buying one CFL (compact florescent bulb) and gradually set a goal to have your entire dorm or apartment using energy efficient light bulbs.

*According to eere.energy.gov, a CFL light bulb uses 75% less energy than a regular bulb.

  • Wash your clothes in cold water at night when energy is at its lowest.

Water Conservation

  • When you see a leak, fix it or just call maintenance!

*Leaking Faucet: Fact- A dripping faucet can waste 20 gallons of water a day. A leaking toilet can use 90,000 gallons of water in a month!

  • Try to conserve water while performing daily tasks such as brushing your teeth, washing your face, and shaving. Take less time showering or even shower with a friend! Do less loads of laundry and fill up the sink when you wash dishes instead of letting the water run.

*Conserve Water: Fact-The United States people use an average of 2.5 gallons of fresh water for every minute they shower.

  • Tap water actually tastes better and is run through regular tests.

*The truth about bottled water: Fact-1.5 million barrels of oil in the US alone are used to make water bottles from polyethylene terephthalate, 86% of which are land filled or incinerated. To find how your tap water sizes up go to: http://www.ewg.org/tapwater/index.php

  • Instead of taking your car to the car wash or washing it yourself in the driveway.
