THE AIR ELEMENT

In the Tarot

Symbolism:

Swords are used to symbolize the air element in the tarot. Sometimes it is helpful to think of the sword slicing through the air (the same kind of consecpt as thinking of the cup as holding the water element)

Ace of swords

This symbolism used in the Tarot:

The ace of swords (pictured here) would combine the numerological aspects of the number 1 with the elemental aspects of air to perhaps symbolize new lines of commuincation being opened.

The air element in itself is not a bad (or good) element. However, swords are generally looked upon in a negative regard in the tarot. Their appearance in a reading can denote struggle, sorrow or sickness. So, the ace of swords could also mean the beginning of a difficult situation. While you may come across several books and readers that will look upon the swords suit in a negative light I urge you to remember that nothing is all good or bad and that the swords suit is representative of the air element which is a symbol of communication and spiritual endeavors.

Note: The tarot combines the aspects of numerology with its four suits, which reflect the four elements, to foretell events in ones life. We do not have time to go into numerology in this site, so all examples given to explain the elements in the tarot will be done with the ace (or the number 1) card. In numerology the number 1 generally refers to new beginnings, originality, and independence.
