In the Tarot
In the tarot the suit of coins, or pentacles in some decks, symbolizes the earth element. Money is often used to symbolize the earth element so it is no surprise that many decks use the coin as the symbol for earth. Other decks use the pentacle, which is the five pointed star in a circle. This symbol is considered to be very magical and is used to reflect the earth element as a metaphor of manifestation of life energy.
The ace of coins (pictured here) would combine the numerological aspects of the number 1 with the elemental aspects of the earth to perhaps symbolize new beginnings in a job or financial endeavor. Since the number one also has such independent qualities this card could symbolize a person starting their own business or working on a project alone.
Whenever the coins or the pentacles appear in the tarot you know that you are dealing with earthly matters. In the most literal sense you are dealing with something that you can put your hands on and touch. However, don't forget that things like jobs, which are not physical in their entirety, also count since they bring about money which is how most people get there material need.
Note: The tarot combines the aspects of numerology with its four suits, which reflect the four elements, to foretell events in ones life. We do not have time to go into numerology in this site, so all examples given to explain the elements in the tarot will be done with the ace (or the number 1) card. In numerology the number 1 generally refers to new beginnings, originality, and independence.
