My introduction to Corvettes came
in 1954 with the "town rich kid" cruising down main street in the best
looking white sports car I'd ever seen. One look at that Vette and I knew
that was my future car!
Years passed, but the little white
sports car was
not forgotten. In 1960, a co- worker
took me out in his new Vette. I'd never experienced such a ride: 80 MPH
before he shifted into 4th gear! The lust was renewed; I must have one!
Other financial priorities prevailed and the Vette purchase was often postponed.
The fire continued to smolder.
Finally, I convinced the lady I was dating to buy a '66 roadster. At least
part of my dream was satisfied. Complete satisfaction came when I married
her and got the Vette in the deal. Since then we've owned over 18 Vettes.
When I retired, we owned a '91
ZR1, '88 35th Anniversary edition, a '70 LT-1 convertible, and a '70 LT-1
customized coupe.
Retirement forced us to "downsize"
to use an overworked word of corporate America. The ZR1 was sold to a guy
in Paris, our son-in-law got the LT-1 roadster and the 35th Anniversary
car went to another Vette nut in Southern California. The LT-1 coupe retired
with us to Whidbey Island, N W of Seattle,Wa.
Vettes and the friendships we developed
thru club activities have been rewarding parts of our lives. We've shined,
shown, raced, rallied, and cruised in them. We have experienced all the
love-hate relationships that come with Vette ownership and never regretted
one moment of the past 32 years of Vetting.
With all the trips our Vette club
makes, we needed a comfortable cruiser Vette like our C-4's were so the
LT-1 was sold. When we found another '91 ZR-1 with only 7800 miles on it,
we bought it on the spot!
The ZR-1 became our cruiser until
the creature comfort temptations of a 2001 C-5 got to us. The C-5 was a
fine Vette but I missed the ZR-1, so it was sold about a year later. I
was fortunate to have the opportunity to buy the late Doug Johnson's BEAST2
custom built with the Street Skinner package & some other performance
goodies by Jim VanDorn and his AutoMasters team.
