RVers
Family Reunion
Wednesday July 29, 2009
6PM
Camp Scholler 12th St (Between Lindbergh and Elm)
Directions
| Who's attending | What's new?
The
era of the big RVers BBQ at Oshkosh is over, let the return-to-basics
begin!
We'll
get together for an evening of sitting around doing nothing, not picking
door prizes, not cooking, not sitting under a tent, not drinking someone
else's free beer. In other words, it'll be a perfect Oshkosh evening.
You're
invited to stop by in the campground where we'll have -- hopefully --
plenty of space for you to sit (on the chair that you bring),
drinking beer or soft drinks (that you brought) and eating some food (that
you cooked on the small, cheapie WalMart grill that we'll buy. We're not
entirely without the desire for a little work!)
We'll
watch the sun set over beautiful Highway 41 and chat about everything
(your first flight, my taking forever to complete the RV) but please observe
normal "hangar rules":
- No Politics
- No Religion
- No Primer
- No whining about the media
Since
there's no freebies or goodies, you don't need to do anything except plan
to be there. I would , however, like to get a head count so that I can
plan accordingly.
I will
have to purchase extra campsites so we'll have the room to spread out.
However, this can be minimized if other RVers camp nearby. We can just
spread out into other RVers' territory. If we do have to buy campsites,
we will ask for donations to help defary the cost (it's $120 per campsite)
But we'll worry about that later.
Since
I'll be blogging and writing on Letters on Flyover Country, I may interview
several of you about your RV life, take a few pictures, shoot a video,
and generally record the event for posterity as best I can and ask you
to do the same if you'd like. I'm not such a good photographer.
Here's
a map of where we'll be. If you'd like to be added
to the headcount, drop
me a note.
I'll post a list here of who's coming.
I'll be there
from Saturday morning, so feel free to stop by at any time and get the
lay of the land. Happy hour begins at 5 p.m. each evening.
I've
thought about having some souvenir T-shirts made up and sell them at cost
( I really like my lime-green 2007 BBQ T-shirt), though this is hardly
my specialty. If you're handy with the art-work, or would like to pitch
in on this effort with your T-shirt expertise, all the better.
Here
are some directions I wrote in previous years. I'm not entirely sure if
the new changes at Oshkosh change these, so be aware. If you have a GPS,
the coordinates are:
N 43 58.489
W 088 34.718

Take Highway 41 South. The exits for the EAA while likely be closed, you
drive past the EAA headquarters and campground and take your next exit

the road will fork to the right. Follow that road (Waukau Rd.), staying

If you want
to walk from there: (If you want to take a bus, click here)
Park
as far to the south as you can, by the snow fence and -- if you want to
walk -- near the break in the fence by the "inflatable movie screen."
Walk up that road to the main road -- Schaik Avenue -- take a right, crossing
the road at a time of your choosing. Walk west past the camper locator
and look for a yellow sign by the road near 14th Street. That'll send
you into the field. See the creek bed? Follow the creek bed on either
side and you'll see us on 12th between the Lindbergh and Elm. Look for
the yellow RV BBQ signs. These are left over from previous years. There's
no BBQ.
If
you want to take a bus from there:
Park in the far southeastern end of the lot near Forest Home Rd. (near
the Main Entrance to Airventure) and walk south (turning right as you
face the Main Entrance) until you get to the Red Barn. Kitty-corner to
the red barn you'll see some showers and the sign "Camper Shuttle").
Get on the shuttle (donate 25 cents, it won't kill you!) and ride up Schaik
Avenue. The bus will turn into the the driveway around the West End Store
(a yellow building). Walk across the street, looking for a yellow BBQ
sign by 14th Street. That'll send you into the field. See the creek bed?

What's New?
June 19 - Updated attendees list
July 11 -- Updated the list. Put out a call on VAF for folks to donate
some snack stuff. I'll bring some watermelon. I count about 78 people
who've RSVP'd, which means we should have about 100. Did anyone invite
the folks from Van's?
