Date Period: pp pre-prohibition; pre-1920 w World War-1 c1918-20: In the 2 years before national prohibition beer was limited to 2.75%w as a WW-1 conservation measure. p Prohibition c1908-37: National prohibition was from 1920-33, however wet and dry dates for individual states vary widely. Most states repealed prohibition in 1933, however the process took longer in some. Alabama and Kansas were last in 1937. h h-permits were used in the early to mid-1920s for tonic’s which were usually sold in drug stores. Alcohol levels varied with the prevailing legislation; usually between one-half and 2%v. L L-permit c1928-33: Around 1928 an L-Type permit was added to cereal beverage (1/2%v) labels. Since national prohibition lasted 13 years, the L-permit serves to identify labels used in the latter half of prohibition. Many breweries were operating as distributors during this period and the L-Permit shows the real supplier. u U-permit c1933-36: Immediately after the repeal of prohibition the fed’s required brewers to show their permit to produce beer on their labels. This was designated the U-permit. This requirement was stopped in 1935 however communication to brewers was poor and brewers were allowed to use up their inventory of labels on hand . A listing of known U-permit numbers for all 12 districts can be found at: http://www.mi-brew.com i IRTP c1933-50: Immediately after repeal brewers were also required to print a tax-paid statement on their labels. This statement appeared in two forms: Tax paid at the rate required by internal revenue law, or the shorter version, Internal Revenue Tax Paid. This requirement was stopped in March of 1950, however brewers were allowed to use up their inventory of labels. |

(1) City & State: For the Brewery of Origin. When the brewer is unknown the location of the distributor or bottler is listed.
(2) Brewery of Origin: BC = Brewing Company; BCp = Brewing Corporation; Bry = Brewery; Brg = Brewing; B’s = Breweries; etc. An asterisk (*) after the Brewery of Origin means the brewery is not listed on the label but has been determined or estimated from available information.
(3) Noteworthy Comments: This is a catch-all for information of interest on the label. This may include bottlers, distributors, agents, bogus brewery names, permit numbers, key-word variations between similar labels etc. Because of space limitations, only the key words are shown for changed sentences or phrases. These changes often arose from discussions with label examiners. An example is ...best imported hops... versus ...imported hops… on similar labels.
Date Period: See listing below. More detailed dating information can be found in the preface.
