Subject: Gresham Chrysler shady dealings

Hello,

I was surfing the net looking for info on Chrysler transmissions and came upon your site. I have some interesting info for you:

Approx 3/1/02 my service engine light came on. The vehicle? A 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan. When I got to Gresham Chrysler (I picked them because of problems with work previously performed at Gresham Dodge) they first offered to take care of the recall for the Fuel Rail before I had a chance to ask them to do it. They said $74 to diagnose the service engine light. (I later found the sequence for doing this with the ignition switch in my Haynes manual) When I came back an hour later, they presenting me with a laundry list of things that were wrong. 1) The belt tensioner was going out. I'll give them credit on their troubleshooting, it was. Their cost, $159. I did it for $52 in parts. 2) The fuel rail needed flushed. How did they arrive at this, I don't know. I use only Chevron or Texaco ( which I strongly recommend) gas for their quality additives. I passed on this. 3) The service engine light problem was the upstream O2 sensor. Their cost $170. I did it for $63 in parts. 4) The front needed new brake pads (down to 10% ) and the rotors turned. The van has not experienced any braking problems. My analysis of the brakes: 40% pads left and the rotors had grooves less than 5/1000. The book recommends turning them at 15/1000 or I also heard when you can snag your fingernail in a groove. In summary, their $759 estimate was taken care of for $180 in parts and the brake pads will set in my garage for another 15-20k miles of driving. I will not go back there.

Joe
