Project clocks. Red = case at 11 3/4 hours. White = drawers
at 7 1/2 hours. |
| My master's instructions for finish follow. I did put one coat
on the back (it is a small, table top, chest and on the view able parts
of the bottom (cutouts and inside the back legs). |
"3 coats on top, sides and front. Paint edges of drawers sloppily.
Everything else should be bare. Painting/finishing the insides of
drawers is generally a no-no (though I've done just what you said.
i.e. the back of the drawer front.) When you rub out the finish,
do your best on the front and top, not quite as good on the sides.
Don't bother with anything else. Follow that with three coats of
oil or oil and turps mixed. Dull finishes were probably common."

Drawers and case drying after the third coat of milk paint. |
 |
Close up of case; paint is still drying (looks splotchy). Total
time is now 1 1/2 hrs in finish and total time of 21 hours. |
 |
The first coat of BLO (straight) really does bring out the real color
of the milk paint. |
 |
After 3 coats of BLO and mounting the hardware. I will wax it
in a week or two and get a final tally of the time. |

Finished back |

Completed unit; 3/4 view |

Final time tally = 22 hours, 6 minutes
Finish time was 2 3/4 hours. |
