Clarinette is my recording project (I am Dan Vallor and I run the Lathe Universe & NZ Archive website). My first LP was released in 2002 on the Ecstatic Yod imprint, this is a collective of Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label & Byron Coley’s Father Yod label. In 2005 the second Clarinette album, Transmuting Fall, was released on CD on Celebrate Psi Phenomenon , Campbell Kneale’s label out of New Zealand (check out loads of brilliant albums from Campbell’s Birchville Cat Motel and other C/Psi/P artists).

Additionally, a limited lathe cut 7” with a full length CD-R of sound experiments was released in 2004. The 7”, titled "Little Fluttery Screamy Thing", features 3 new pieces, while the accompanying CD-R includes the pieces from the 7”, one track from each of my 2 albums (Haze & Transmuting Fall) and a load of dicey sound experiments from the making of the 7” and the Transmuting Fall album. I would argue strenuously that this EP is not the best starting point for my work because, as the title suggests, it’s pretty scattered and scrapey.

New material was commissioned and recorded for Norwegian label Humbug, these pieces were for use in sound collage and a compilation and have not yet seen release.

Thanks again to critic Charlie Wilmoth; in addition to his glowing review of Haze on the Dusted Magazine page, he named the album # 4 for 2002 in the Village Voice annual "Pazz & Jop" poll .

Mr. Wilmoth has also been kind to the Clarinette album Transmuting Fall on Celebrate Psychic Phenomenon. His review again appeared in Dusted Magazine

My old friend Stephen Fievet has a brief write up of Haze on his babysue® reviews page . He only describes the record, however, because his policy (rightly so) has him forgoing critical analysis of his friends records. I should mention that if you decide to explore the babysue® site further, you should understand that Stephen's sense of humor is caustic, sometimes cruel and often in astoundingly bad taste though he's still incredibly funny. His pop "band" LMNOP is one fine and strange flavor of bubblegum too, they are pure sunny pop with a dark lyrical side and nothing like Clarinette. If you're interested in great pop, I recommend their/his "Forever Through The Sun" 7", "Mnemonic Pony" CD-R, "Numbles" CD-R (both reissues of prior French New Rose releases) and his more recent "Camera Sized Life" CD. All are available from the babysue® Store.
