Peace March NYC 3/20/04

(had to change this wonderful photo to a link because it was screwing up the page.)
Haven't had this much fun since Seabrook anti-nuke rallies in '79.
I got so many wonderful pictures, I'm having a hard time making up my mind which ones to post. It was a wonderful experience for me to have Erin and her friend Tim with me. They were excited just to be going to New York. I hoped it would be something she could tell her grandchildren about and a good civics lesson. It was all that and so much more.

I had the honor of being invited by Danny Schechter ("News Dissector") to his office to meet and chat before the rally. Danny's been doing great work for years. He signed a copy of his book on right wing media manipulation "Weapons of Mass Deception" for me. I've started reading it and it's fascinating.
I encourage you to visit "News Dissector Weblog" and keep an eye out for Danny.
Demonstration highlights:
The speakers- They were difficult to hear (and impossible to see), being in the midst of a seething throng, but everyone hushed to hear Dennis Kucinich and 100,000 cheering for him after was deafening and thrilling.
The signs- Many very imaginative and/or funny. Speaking out against the administrations policies against humanity and the environment of MANY countries in addition to Iraq and America. This was much more than a march against the war on Iraq.
But most of all, the people- As in WE THE PEOPLE! Equal parts young, middle aged, old (I was touched to see how many white haired folks were marching, some in groups, some alone. Wisdom marched with us.), black, white, yellow, brown; veterans and families of soldiers, families of Sept 11 victims. Everyone chanting, singing, clapping. It was a joyous sound. (My favorite chant- one young woman yelling "Tell me what democracy looks like!" the crowd yelling back "THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!!!!!" Gives me goosebumps just writing about it.
Many of my favorite organizations were there including two that I love, Raging Grannies and Billionaires for Bush.
Special thanks to my friend Lisa who basically gave up her apartment in Manhattan to us for the weekend and insisted that she was delighted to do it. She's a beautiful person.
Without further adieu I give you... the images. (Please forgive some of the "Batman" camera angles. I took many of these with my camera held over my head with no idea what I was shooting.)
Enjoy!
