Long ago, the Lakes were used for a
variety of reasons including Ice Harvesting
and Recreation, including Carnivals and Steam Boat Rides. Babbs
Beach, on Middle Pond, was a popular place to go for swimming,
boating, roller skating, dancing, picnicking, playground and ball
field, and a great snack bar.
The Southwick Historical
Society also has much information about the history of the Congamond
Lakes as well as the surrounding communities. There is a fantastic
book available on the subject.
There is another
old
pamphlet published in cooperation
with Babbs Beach that dates back to the early 1960's. There is
a
wealth of historic information and even some aerial photography
in it's pages. Some of the photos date back to early 1900's. The
file is a large one
(7.8 Mb) so it will take a minute or so to load, and it requires
