following two Making of America web sites:
At Cornell University: http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/moa
Cornell has about 1 million pages scanned online and displayed as GIFs and these GIFs
are indexed! University of Michigan site: http://moa.umdl.umich.edu
Sharon also brought in:
The Historical Atlas of New York City,
by Eric Homberger
Henry Holt & Company 1996 - 2nd edition

willing to write anything, short or long, send it to George Newton,
mailto:gnewton@ford.com
New visitor Laura Wilk.
Old standby's Mark, Karen, George, Helen, Mike & Mike, Chuck & Diane.
George Newton told us about Youngstown, Ohio resources Historical Society
City library papers back to 1860's or so. The Iron & Steel Institute; have
death index and films of death records. Dates up to about the 1930's.
There is an Ancestry series on genealogy on tv is on channel WFUM (Flint
Public Radio) on Friday & Saturday; times not known. Check on the web.
Diane Simms contacted Chuck about a presentation from the genealogy club
showing the diversity but similarities between us all. Chuck Oslund and
Mike Salsberry and maybe others can help on this; where ancestors come
from around the world, and just how small the world is. How we may connect.
Any ideas welcomed; mixing genealogy with diversity; we all came from
somewhere; have roots all over the world, not just in America. Antidotes
on an ancestor would be great. Seminar is happening Oct 4th Time not
know yet.
Area where border kept changing in Poland and Germany; people were called
Cashoobs.
Mark: is back in School; going after a Masters in Engineering. He's
probably not getting much data entry done for Karen these days. Took a
vacation to Ohio, Georgia, Florida doing research and visiting family and
going to a family reunion. Talked about taking pictures of tombstones and
putting them on the Internet.
Karen: Broke through three problem spots while on vacation. Ansley name:
Found the ancestor she couldn't find a name for. Jackson County Court
House, Georgia. Israel Johnson Criss County, Georgia; got two death
certificates which ended up being a father and son of the same
name. Millie Clay married to David Hesters; Looking for death of Millie
Hesters and found it. Karen is elated.
Laura: Needs to go to court houses and libraries to do research; has info
from families: scrap books kept by mother, grandmother, great-grandmother.
Mike McCarthy: Just remarried July 22. Congrats! Has note cards
in wallet for what he wants to remember to do. One note to remind him to
write cousin who is one of four who own cemetery plot in Big Rapids.
George got long form of census. Has not done a lot in last few months.
Can't tie people of same name on same street. Frustrating. Thinking about
making his own urn for when he goes to the great beyond; that way he can
pick it out and have just what he wants. He's a tin-smith.
Helen: hasn't been researching in Lansing nor the LDS. Ordered two vital
records and got them and they were the right ones. Needs to find where to
look for father's passport in Poland or Austria (that part of Polan was part
of Austria in the time frame. Web site
http://www.rootsweb.com/~polwgw/frames.html gives information that the LDS
filmed passports so Helen can check that out.
Michigan Vital Records can be ordered on line or download forms to order by
mail at: http://www.mdch.state.mi.us/PHA/OSR/vitframe.htm
Mike Salsberry: In Genesee County about 1990 he found some Saulsberry's
living there. Purchased "The Ancestry Family Historian's Address Book" by
Juliana Szuce Smith, ISBN 0-91648974-4. Attended a Family reunion in
Chicago area. Went to a big county court house (Cook County) with metal
detectors and all that but only found dead ends; asked to look at deeds and
was told he needed a 'pin number' turns out it means he needs the address
of the property then fill out paper work and then they will give him a pin
number then he can research the deed. Went to vital records but could only
search past 10 years; death records across street in another bldg;
directed him to 11th floor to look at books them selves instead of microfilm
copies. Didn't find anything but was a new experience. Went to Newberry
Library: didn't rush to get there as was on vacation. Got there 9:30 am to
find out main bldg open but reading
room not open until 10. They run the library like an archive, fill out
forms saying what you are looking for, assign you a desk and you fill our
forms for books and they bring to you. To get a copy you fill out a form
saying what you want a copy of. They charge .25 copy plus $1 set up fee
per title copied. Check out at
http://www.newberry.org/nl/collections/usinghome.html
No open stacks.
Diane: found a marriage record for a Cryderman who married in Ontario but
was looking for marriage in Michigan. Should not have been named Cryderman
on marriage record as she was married before so name should have been Ralph
on marriage record. Finding Cryderman research is similar to day time
soaps: Mother and daughter marry brothers, sister has several illegitimate
children, etc.
Chuck: completed data entry on research he did more than a year ago.
Handed out a copy of newspaper article on flooding at the Burton Historical
Archives in the Detroit Library. The Burton Room, until further notice, is
closed until October 15th. See
http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/special_collections.htm
for more information.
