Dominican
Sisters at Genesis Farm
Caldwell, New Jersey
Genesis
Farm, 140 acres of rolling hills, woodlands, marshes, houses and
farm buildings, was bequeathed to the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell,
New Jersey in 1978.
This
providential event followed two decades of a growing awareness
of the urgent problems affecting the planet worldwide: a deluge
of evidence documenting the pollution of air, water and soils,
the demise of small family farms, world hunger, and the deep national
rifts created by racism and war. This bequest gave the Sisters
an opportunity to act on their profound and ever-increasing concern
about these global problems, and the belief that answers must
begin locally.
In Genesis
Farm, the Sisters have created a practical expression of their
commitment to protect and cultivate the earth's ability to sustain
life.
-
This process began in 1989 when Genesis Farm (GFI) was incorporated
for the purpose of maintaining a center for stewardship of our
earth.
-
Through association with New Jersey Farmland Preservation and
Green Acres Open Space programs, GFI has ensured ongoing protection
of the Genesis Farm land.
-
Since 1986, the farm has fostered a community-supported biodynamic
garden, drawing economic support from over 200 shareholders for
vegetable cultivation and the creation of an orchard.
-
The farm's Ecological Learning Center offers programs, some accredited,
in alternative ways to achieve a closer relationship with nature
and true human and ecological well-being.
