Leopardskin jasper is one of the many varieties of cryptocrystaline quartz, which includes others such as agates, chalcedony, and various other jaspers. This stone comes from Mexico, although I have recently seen material coming from a source in India as well, and is usually relatively inexpensive. Its obvious appealing characteristic is its splotchy pattern reminiscent of a leopard's hide. It makes an attractive and unusual and attractive stone for unique art pieces.
As with most Jaspers and Agates, it is quite hard, and somewhat brittle. It can chip while cutting, but when polished, takes a beautiful shine.
