Uncle Sam Needs You!

What can I do as a civilian to help my country fight terrorism?
You can become a civilian volunteer in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, thereby freeing up active duty Coast Guard personnel to concentrate on law enforcement and national security duties.

What would I do as a United States Coast Guard Auxiliarist?
With the proper training, provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, you would do everything the Coast Guard does with the exception of law enforcement and combat activities.  In fact, you would be such an integral part of the Coast Guard that you would wear the same uniform with the exception of the trim color... the Coast Guard's trim is gold while the Auxiliary's is silver.

Give me some examples of these activities.
Be on call to provide your time and talents to the Coast Guard in a national emergency, such as 9/11, in accordance with a voluntary pre-agreed upon schedule as part of the Coast Guard's new Patriot Readiness Program.
Perform on-the-water Safety Patrols, Regatta Patrols, Environment Patrols, Aids to Navigations Patrols and Search and Rescue Missions on your own vessel or on the vessels of fellow Auxiliarists.
Conduct Vessel Safety Checks to reduce the probability of boating disasters that result in needless loss of lives and resource depleting search and rescue missions.
Inspect commercial fishing vessels.
Patrol the New England coast in privately owned Auxiliary aircraft as a pilot or as an air observer.
Stand watch at the Boston Light Station as a guide or a language translator for the tourists.
Stand radio watch at Coast Guard Stations, handling distress calls, etc. from boaters and other Coast Guard units.
Work with the local television, radio and printed media to get the Coast Guard's message out to the public.
Teach boating related classes to the general public and/or teach training classes to the Auxiliary members.
Provide administrative support to the local Coast Guard units in the performance of such tasks such as processing records, etc.
Provide career counseling to young people interested in a career in the Coast Guard or in attending the Coast Guard Academy.

Sounds like a lot of work.
It's not all work. One of the Auxiliary's cornerstones is fellowship. At monthly flotilla meetings and periodic district conferences you will have an opportunity to socialize and develop lasting friendships with other members who share your same interests .
