Sonny's First Scene on GH, August 13, 1993

He might have been captivated by Karen Wexler, but we were enthralled
by Maurice Benard...making his debut as Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital.
In those first moments, we had no way of knowing how complex and intense this character really was,
but Maurice and head writer Claire Labine were about to send us to school!

Scene: Paradise Lounge. Stone is waiting for Sonny, who has been out of town.
Carrie (Karen) Wexler is looking for trouble...and finds it.

(Sonny's talking to another woman, when Carrie walks by.)

(He stares at her for a moment, and then approaches her.)

Sonny: What time do you go on?

Carrie: What?

Sonny: I was asking...I made a mistake. I assumed since it was amateur night, you were performing.

Carrie: Oh no, I couldn't do that!

Sonny: How come?

Carrie: Well, because I would feel self conscious.

Sonny: You don't look like the self conscious type.
You look sure of yourself like you don't do anything you don't want to do.

Carrie: Really?

Sonny: Yeah. A pretty girl like you must like to dance, right?

Carrie: Right. Thank you for the compliment.

Sonny: You're welcome...stripping is dancing.

Carrie: (laughs) No, I don't think so, it's a little different than that.

Sonny: No, it's a form of expression, same thing. Take a look around.
If you saw these women on the street, would you automatically think “stripper?”

Carrie:(looks around)

Sonny: Take a look at that one in the three-piece suit. I'd say she's a lawyer...what about you?

Carrie: Yeah, definitely...a prosecutor. What's your point?

Sonny: (grins) You kinda sound like a prosecutor. My point is, there is no type.
And it's not far to assume otherwise. That's like making a generalization about someone
because of the way they wear their hair.

Carrie: That's a very good point. I never thought of it that way.
Hmm. Um...do they get a chance to rehearse before they go up?

Sonny: Not here...the amateurs anyway. But the regular staff dancers use the club when it's closed.

Carrie: Do they ever bomb?

Sonny: Sure...it's intimidating to get on stage in front of people.
But there are others, I've seen them a million times...their eyes adjust to the light;
they hear the roar of approval from the crowd...and they know they're home.

(A dancer takes the stage, and they watch her.)

Sonny: How 'bout a drink?

Carrie: Yeah...

Stone: (walks up to them) You two already met?

Sonny: We've already been to court.

Carrie: (laughs) Yeah, except for we really don't even know each other's names.

Stone: This is Sonny!

Sonny: (to Carrie) Very nice to meet you. (to Stone) Get over here!
Where the hell you been? I missed you.

(Carrie looks on in astonishment as Sonny & Stone embrace. Sonny stares back at her.)

Carrie: So, you're the famous Sonny, huh? Well, actually I should have guessed.
You're acting like you own the club, and you do.

Sonny: I gather Stone has mentioned me?

Carrie: Yeah, one or twice.

Sonny: Don't believe a word he says.

Carrie: Oh no? What if it was good?

Sonny: Well, that's different. (to Stone) So, how the hell are you?

Stone: Good, good...I need to catch you up on some things.

Sonny: Carrie, you...

Carrie: Oh, I'm fine!

Sonny: (to bartender) Anything she wants is on my tab, OK?
(to Carrie)
And I expect a full report on the prosecutor.

Carrie: (laughs) All right.

(Stone looks back and forth between them)

Sonny: OK, come on.

(Stone and Sonny walk off.)

(End of scene)
