Getting Started - Research

If you are going to prepare, the first thing you need is a plan. You will need to decide what threats you want to prepare for, for what period of time, and how many people you want to provide for. I highly suggest you do not do what I did, which is go to Wal Mart and fill your grocery cart. You will be discarding most of what you have purchased in a few years and have to do it all over again.

To make a plan you need information. Purchase a good book on the subject that will teach you about self sufficiency, food storage and planning, shelf life of different foods, etc. Most good books have charts that will help you determine how much food you will need of each food group, and what else you will need. Here are my favorite books on the subject:

The NEW Passport To Survival. 12 Steps to Self-Sufficient Living by Rita Bingham

Making the Best of Basics: Family Preparedness Handbook by James Talmage Stevens

No Such Thing As Doomsday by Philip L Hoag

Here are some websites with general survival/preparedness info:

http://www.survival-center.com/index.htm Great basic site with some good info

http://www.survival-center.com/guide/ Intro guide from the same site

http://www.pipeline.com/~jeriwho/emer_faq.htm Good beginners intro guide

http://www.pep-c.org/homepage/ another good beginners guide

http://www.survivalforum.com/

http://www.alpharubicon.com/index2.html

http://www.oism.org/ddp/ Doctors for disaster preparedness, interesting site

While many of these sites have the word “survival” in them, don’t be put off by that. I am not an outdoorsman and have 2 small children to take care of. I will not be running around in the woods eating insects anytime soon. lol Survival to me means have extra food on hand, a means to cook it, heat my home and maintain certain necessities such as laundry, bathing, etc..
