F-14 FLEET DEFENDER
(I) MicroProse; Scott Spanburg; 1994; ***+
Adv/Air/Tac
1

A flight simulation of the F-14 Tomcat, this program emphasized carrier-based operations. Campaigns included the North Cape, the Mediterranean and training (Oceana, Virginia Beach, Virginia). This was quickly superseded by FLEET DEFENDER GOLD; recently re-released as part of a "shovelware" package -- CONQUER THE SKIES.

F-14 TOMCAT
(C/I) Activision/Dynamix; Steve Ritchie; 1989; UNRATED
Beg/Air/Tac
1

A fighter simulation more akin to an arcade game.

F-15 STRIKE EAGLE
(A/C/Ap/ST/I) MicroProse; Sid Meier; 1984; *****
Int/Air/Tac
1

The first "classic" fighter simulation, this product was a benchmark of its time. Virtually the first computer flight game to actually make an attempt at simulation, this became the "take-off" product for MicroProse Software. Chaff, flares and weapons load-out plus challenging missions were present -- but no matter how much your memory tells you how good this was, do yourself a favor and keep it in your own memory and not that of the computer. Assuming that a contemporary computer can be sufficiently slowed to run the program (on 5-1/4 inch diskettes), the graphics are primitive and the play value just as obsolete.

F-15 STRIKE EAGLE II
(ST/Am/I) MicroProse; Sid Meier & Andy Hollis; 1989; ***+
Int/Air/Tac
1

An update of F-15 to then-current state-of-the-art graphics. This was the first program to portray the horizon as a shaded haze.

F-15 II OPERATION DESERT STORM SCENARIO DISK
(ST/Am/I) MicroProse; Andy Hollis; 1991; ***+
Int/Air/Tac
1

An add-on disk to F-15 II with Gulf War scenarios.

F-15 III
(I) MicroProse; James Day and Andy Hollis; 1992; ****
Int-Adv/Air/Tac
1

Updating the graphics and gameplay to then-current state-of-the-art graphics, this was a detailed simulation with both campaign and tactical overtones.

F-16 AGGRESSOR

1-4; M

A detailed contemporary flight simulation.

F-22 LIGHTNING II
(I) NovaLogic; John Garcia; 1996; ***+
Int/Air/Tac-Op
1-8; M

Voluptuously lush as a graphic vehicle, the flight physics of this simulation were questionable. Nevertheless, it was easier to learn than most flight simulations and the graphics often made up for the loss of reality.

F-22 LIGHTNING III
(I-95 CD) NovaLogic; John Garcia and Wes Eckhart; 1999; ***
Int/Air/Tac-Op
1-128; M

A contemporary air fighter simulation, typical of NovaLogic designs in that realism is subordinated to graphics and gameplay.

F-22 RAPTOR
(I) NovaLogic; John Garcia and Randy Casey; 1997; ***+
Int/Air/Tac-Op
1-8; M

Designed to answer the criticisms directed at F-22 LIGHTNING II, this was supposed to enhance the graphics and radically notch up the realism factor.  Instead, it was "half a step, half a step, half a step onwards".

F-22 RAPTOR
{cf. iF-22}

F-29 RETALIATOR
(Am/ST/I) Ocean; Martin Kenwright; 1990; **+
Int/Air/Tac
1-2; M

An ultra-modern fighter simulation, this product was distinguished by its relatively moderate release cost. However, it was rather generic in nature.

F-117A

FALCON
(Am/ST/M/I) Spectrum Holobyte; Gilman Louie; 1987; ***+
Adv/Air/Tac
1-2; M

The beginning of both a company and a legend in air simulations, this was the first detailed flight simulation. Layered-on complexity added to a perceived realism which had not been attempted in that level heretofore.

FALCON AT
(I) Spectrum Holobyte; Gilman Louie; 1988; ***+
Adv/Air/Tac
1-2; M

The sequel to FALCON, the graphics were radically improved and the complexity grew apace.

FALCON 3.0
(I) Spectrum Holobyte; Gilman Louie; 1991; *****
Adv/Air/Tac
1-2; M

FALCON was not a game system as much as it was a way of life. The manual was consistent with the game, and used a layered level of teaching flight operations. Although the graphics were rendered polygons, they were still impressive for the time; interestingly enough, while everyone remembers this as a classic, few recall that the initial release was plagued with "undocumented features" which took several patches to fix. Recently re-released as part of a "shovelware" package -- CONQUER THE SKIES.

FALCON 3.0: OPERATION FIGHTING TIGER

FALCON 4.0
(I-95 CD) MicroProse; Gilman Louie and Steve Blankenship;. 1998;
****+
Adv/Air/Tac
1-multi; M

An updated FALCON, this had been eagerly awaited by flight simulation fans everywhere. The question was whether expectations exceeded delivery potential.  In virtually all respects, this product delivered on all levels.   Yes, there were bugs in the final product, but surprisingly few when compared with FALCON 3.0;  the documentation and flight modelling were excellent.  Overall, a fine simulation, but at the same time, a pang of hesitation remains.  FALCON 4.0 is a class act, but there was enough other strong competition so that while it stands first, it does not do so by a huge margin.   Nevertheless, for anyone interested in contemporary flight simulations, this remains a mandatory purchase.

FALCON PATROL 2
(C) Artworx; xxx; 1986; UNRATED
Beg/Air/Tac
1

An arcade air combat game.

FALKLANDS '82
(C) Firebird; John Bethell; 1985; **+
Beg/Air-Land-Nav/Op
1

A simulation of the Falklands Conflict, it made up in price value what it lacked in historical accuracy. However, as time passed by, so did the utility of this game. Overall, a "beer and pretzels" game which lacked the taste of pretzels and the flavor of beer.

FAST ATTACK
(I/95 CD) Sierra/Software Sorcery; James R. Jones III; 1995; ***+
Int/Nav/Tac-Op
1

A modern submarine simulation with superb "cut scenes"; however, realism was subject to question when the submarine cavitated at 5 knots or less. Overall, a program with much depth but subject to questions on its "lessons learned".

FIGHTING FALCON: BACK TO BAGHDAD
(I CD) Military Simulations, Inc.; Bob Carter and George Keverian; 1995; UNRATED
Adv/Air/Tac
1-2; M

A post-Desert Storm F-16 combat flight simulator, this was characterized by both a long learning curve and possibly an excess of detail. Overall, an impressive achievement of flight simulation and aerial combat.

FIREPOWER
(C/GS/I) Activision/Microillusions/Silent Software, Inc.; Baron Reichart Kurt Von Wolfsheild; 1987; UNRATED
Beg/Land/Tac
1-2; M

A modern combat simulation with helicopter support, but basically an arcade product involving two tanks racing against each other to "capture the flag".

FLANKER 2.0
(I-95 CD) Strategic Simulations, Inc.; Nick Grey and Igor Tishin; 1999;
***+
Adv/Air/Tac
1-32; M

Well-designed Russian flight simulator, but with a lack of scenarios which "grab".  With the demise of the Soviet Union, the likelihood of NATO-Soviet conflict dissipated.  Thus, the simulation postulated conflict in the Crimea.  Although the graphics and gameplay are attractive, the scenarios simply lack a joie de vivre.  But then again, if one is interested in scenarios which are more "real", is Chechnyian close air support any more attractive?

FLEET DEFENDER GOLD
(I) MicroProse; Scott Spanburg; 1994; ***+
Adv/Air/Tac
1

This included F-14 FLEET DEFENDER, plus two additional theaters of operation (Indian Ocean and Korean Peninsula), a mission builder, a multi-media presentation of naval aviation and a tutorial. The "gold" is chrome added onto a relatively decent system, but as with most flight simulations, it has the durability and staying power of raw fish. The simulation was well researched and programmed, but tended to merge into the background of the plethora of other flight simulations being offered at approximately the same time.

FLIGHT COMMANDER
(M) Big Time Software; Charles Moylan; 1994; UNRATED
Int/Air/Op
1-2; M

A "thinking man's flight simulation", this was a test of the art of operational air campaign planning and not a joystick simulation.

FLIGHT COMMANDER 2
(M/I) Avalon Hill/Big Time Software; Charles Moylan; 1994; ****+
Int/Air/Op
1-2; M

Like its predecessor, FLIGHT COMMANDER, this was an operational air planning simulation. Scenarios ranged from Vietnam to the present, and were both challenging and interesting; in some of the Vietnam bridge-busting scenarios, you could do everything right and still fail to destroy the target. But scenarios were available to layer on complexity and illustrate both close air support, air interdiction and air superiority missions. Overall, a highly recommended simulation, and one which continues to reside on my hard drive.

FLIGHT COMMANDER 2 MISSION BUILDER

FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER
(Am/ST/I) Spectrum Holobyte; Rod Hyde; 1990; ***
Adv/Air/Tac
1

A complex flight simulator of Vietnam air operations. Although relatively detailed and accurate, it seemed to garner the same popularity as the Vietnam Conflict.

FLIGHT SIM TOOLKIT
(I) Domark; Jonathan Newth; 1994; ***+
Adv/Air/Tac
1

A fascinating, although difficult to use, construction kit. Construct your own tactical fighter, but it had better be both aerodynamically stable and properly designed in all respects. I admired the program, but found it too challenging.

FLIGHT SIMULATOR
(A/C/AM/I) SubLogic; Bruce Artwick; 1987; ***+
Adv/Air/Tac
1

The first and classic flight simulator, continuously updated for graphics and gameplay. More interesting as a civilian flight simulator; its World War I portion was ahistorical, slow and ponderous. RED BARON covered the period in a far more intriguing fashion. However, FLIGHT SIMULATOR is regularly updated, and there are a myriad of add-on products and geographic environments.

FLYING NIGHTMARES
(M) Eidos; xxx; xxx; UNRATED
Adv/Air/Tac-Op

(I-95 CD) Red Storm; John T. Farnsworth and Brian Upton; 1999; ****
Int/Land/Tac-Op
1-2; M

A 3D tactical simulation of Sino-American conflict in the Russian area of operations, this was a
RAINBOW SIX on a conventional and  operational level.  A "sleeper" product which deserved more attention than it received in the marketplace.

GEOPOLITIQUE 1990
(C/Ap) Strategic Simulations Inc.; Bruce Ketchledge; 1983; **
Int/Dip/St
1

Power politics in the 1980s; both presentation and Realpolitik have rendered this obsolete. The geographic maps were skewed to represent actual "power projections", but ended up just being skewed. Slow, dull and tedious -- but enough of its strengths ...

Cold War nightmares rendered obsolescent by time, computer development and political reality.

GLOBAL COMMANDER
(C/ST) DataSoft; J. Wilson; 1988; *
Beg/Dip/Str
1

A global confrontation simulation, it bore little resemblance to reality and had a very limited entertainment value. Unrealistic SDI-type weaponry coupled with mediocre scenarios and limited replay value yielded a game which could quickly be forgotten.

GLOBAL DOMINATION
(I) Impressions; David Lester; 1994; ***
Beg/Land/Op-Str
1-4; M

A multi-player game of world conquest, it most resembled RISK but with clunkier graphics. Revolutions added to gameplay, but overall, there was little of innovation or graphic appeal to sustain this on a hard drive.

GOLAN FRONT

GULF STRIKE
(At/Ap/C/I) Avalon Hill; Mark Herman and Winchell Chung; 1984; ***
Int/Air-Land-Nav/Op
1-2

Based on the more successful boardgame of the same name, its play mechanics were clumsy. However, its graphics were even worse, and the color scheme had to be one of the worst ever seen in the computer field. But if one could overcome the "retro-art", the game was one of the more accurate simulations.

GULF WAR: OPERATION DESERT HAMMER
(I-95 CD) 3DO; xxx; 1999; UNRATED
Int/Land-Air/Tac
1-8; M

It was difficult to decide if this was an arcade "shoot-em-up" or a quasi-tactical return to the KTO (Kuwait Theater of Operations) for a new round.  Never mind, the former was the answer.

GUNBOAT: RIVER COMBAT SIMULATOR
(Am/I) Accolade; Tom Loughry; 1990; **+
Int/Nav/Tac
1

A simulation of Vietnam riverine operations, it was more of an arcade game. However, it did cover an aspect of warfare never attempted before. The graphics were similar to STEEL THUNDER by the same designer.

GUNSHIP
(C/ST/Am/I) MicroProse; Arnold Hendrick; 1986; ****+
Int/Air/Tac
1

Like F-15 STRIKE EAGLE and fighter aircraft, this was the first helicopter simulation to have the "look and feel" of rotary aircraft operations. Good graphics coupled with excellent gameplay made this a classic; however, keep it in your own memory and do not try to recapture the spirit of yesteryear.

GUNSHIP 2000
(I) MicroProse; Jim Day; 1991; ****
Int/Air/Tac
1

An update of GUNSHIP, it covered several rotary-wing aircraft in various theaters. Be sure to get the patched version (better collective implementation). Recently re-released as part of a "shovelware" package -- CONQUER THE SKIES.

HALLS OF MONTEZUMA
(Am/M/Ap/C/I) Strategic Studies Group; Roger Keating; 1988; **+
Int/Land/Tac-Op
0-2

The BATTLEFRONT system writ once again, this covered the U.S. Marine Corps from the Mexican War through Vietnam, with emphasis on World War II. Battles included Belleau Wood (World War I), Okinawa and Iwo Jima (World War II) on brigade/divisional level operations. The main problem was a lack of definition; if the scenario did not explicitly state that it was World War II or the Mexican War, the user would never have been able to tell the difference. Too much of the generic wargame?

HARPOON
(Am/M/I) Three Sixty; Larry Bond, Gordon Walton and Don Gilman; 1988; *****
Int/Nav-Air/Op
1-2; M

The best contemporary naval simulation ever done (based on the GDW boardgame), balancing a near-perfect blend of historical accuracy and gameplay; it included BATTLESET #1 (GIUK). Of course, such perfection came dear, and the initial releases of the program were plagued with "undocumented features" ad nauseam. But the designers kept plugging away, and eventually the classic version evolved. Detailed and intricate, yet easy to learn, it can teach valuable lessons while remaining an entertaining gaming experience. Repackaged as part of HARPOON CLASSIC; for the current edition, cf. HARPOON CLASSIC '97.

Due to grognard demands, HARPOON was redesigned from the ground up -- even the interface was changed. However, in becoming more of a simulation, it became less of a game. Yes, there were added parameters and design features in the newer version, yet it just did not have the appeal of its predecessor. For naval officers, this may well prove the better choice; for everyone else, ... This has been repackaged as part of the DEFINITIVE WARGAME COLLECTION 2.

A simulation of Latin American politics, the player began as the new leader of a faction which has overthrown the government. Your mission was to form a new government and succeed in placating the political spectrum. The mechanics were simple; point and click to an option, but the political ramifications were much deeper. Some accused the program of anti-Americanism, others declared it fascist -- whatever, it taught valuable lessons. Overall, one could best succeed as a left-of-center leader; no matter what, placating the United States often proved to be too costly in terms of popular support. Interestingly enough, an unsuccessful fascist could often retire to Switzerland with his looted millions, while failed leftists usually bled to death on the palace steps. Educational, but fun, although replay value was limited.

HIGH ROLLER
