Friends of Coronado State Monument
|
Welcome to Our Web Site Our Vision The Friends of Coronado State Monument was started in May 2003 by five interested people and the Manager of Coronado State Monument. The vision of the Friends is to continue to maintain this uniquely beautiful and historic site and increase its awareness in the general public, in educational institutions, in New Mexico, and throughout the United States. To support this vision, we are establishing a sound financial structure through membership, fund-raising, as well as corporate and private donations. About the Monument Within Coronado State Monument is located the Kuaua Pueblo archeological site , a prehistoric Native American structure that was first occupied approximately 700 years ago. Coronado wintered nearby during his exploration into New Mexico in 1540. Excavated in the 1930’s and partially reconstructed, weather and time are taking their toll on this historic ruin. Constant work is needed to preserve it.
