Service Opportunities

NHS members are required to have at least 3 hours of service each quarter and 15 hours for the year.

4 hours - In-school tutoring through the Homework Club
4 hours - Any of the listed Service Projects that the Service Project Committee has put forth (look below for more information or see Lauren Mundy)
7 hours - Individual hours (Glenwood tutoring and Spring Move hours go towards the 7 hour total)
= 15 total hours for the school year

Hours are not transferable - you must fulfil the required total for each section.
You are required to do at least 3 service hours (in general, meaning for any of the above sections) per quarter (the purpose being that you can't do all of your hours at once - you have to spread at least three into both 3rd and 4th quarter).

To report service hours complete the Service Completion Form and submit the hard copy to Ms. Chawkat, Mrs. Ruland, or Matt Hoyt. Your hours will be posted on the Service Hours page. Members are advised to verify their hours.

There is currently a need for services in the following areas:

Spring move to new wing: GHS teachers collective

The Spring Move for a number of GHS teachers is underway! Members are still required to help at least one teacher pack for the move - please contact your assigned teacher as soon as possible and arrange when you can help. If you forget what teacher you volunteered/were assigned to, please check the list posted in Ms. Chawkat's room.

Harmony Hall: Service Project

Harmony Hall needs NHS members to visit on Mondays after-school from 3:15-5 to play games with the residents. It's an easy way to attain two service project hours and participation looks great on college applications. Please contact Lauren Mundy (laurenmundy@aol.com) with the Monday you plan to attend or if you would like more information about visiting on other days of the week. If she does not get enough responses by the end of next week, participation dates will be assigned.

Chill for Children: Service Project

NHS members can fulfil more service hours by ice skating on Saturday, April 19th from 7:45-9:45. Tickets will cost only $10 a person and proceeds will go towards the Children's Cancer Foundation. Please save the date. All students are invited to participate, but NHS members will receive service project hours for their donation.

Special Olympics: Service Project

Earn your service hours and add a great activity to your resume by volunteering time helping Special Olympics Howard County on any one of their three upcoming events: April 19th Inspiration Walk at Centennial Park-Lake, April 27th Bocce/Athletics Competition at Wilde Lake H.S., or May 18th Softball Invitational at Kwanis-Wallas Park. The volunteer form is attached to this message: Please print a copy and give the completed form to Lauren Mundy or Andy Byun so that your participation can count towards your Service Project Hours.
