My Plant Experience
Based on the conditions in my setup, here is list of the species that have
(and have not) worked for me:
Current Successful Plants
- Anubias coffeefolia (started as large plants; growing steadily; 4x growth
in 15 months)
- Anubias frazeri (started as large plants; growing but not as robustly as
A. nana and A. coffeefolia; 4x growth in 12 months)
- Anubias nana (started as large plant; growing steadily; 4x growth 12 months)
- Cryptocoryne walkeri (original plants; a few left; getting crowded out;
hanging on)
- Cryptocoryne wendtii (original plants; copper; a few left; getting crowded
out; coming back on)
- Cryptocoryne x willisii (mostly these in Cryptocoryne patch)
- Cryptocoryne x willisii lucens (tougher to grow than red/brown variety;
interspersed)
- Microsorium pteropus (original plants; gets kind of wild after awhile; reformed
as big plant after Anubias cutback May 2004)
- Rotala indica (original plant; added massive quantity in spring 2003; my
personal favorite stem plant)
Failed and/or Removed Plants
- Anubias nana (small specimens; didn't last; get big specimens!)
- Aponogeton crispus (grew; got big, died off)
- Aponogeton fenestralis (single bulb never really germinated)
- Aponogeton ulvaceus (got huge; then went to sleep)
- Barclaya longifolia (single bulb never germinated)
- Bacopa monnieri (would not stay in the substrate; not enough light; I hate
this plant)
- Cabomba caroliniana (not enough light)
- Cryptocoryne balansae (too much moving around; need more of these to make
worthwhile)
- Cryptocoryne wendtii (bronze; got completely crowded out)
- Didiplis diandra (grew quickly; died off in late summer)
- Echinodorus x “Ozelot” (got too big)
- Echinodorus paniculatus (got way too big)
- Glossostigma elatinoides (not enough light)
- Lileaopsis brasilensis (not enough light)
- Limnophilia sessiliflora (grew very fast; very tall/long stems; probably
not enough light; tried twice)
- Myriophyllum heterophyllum (prone to collect algae; ugly; not enough light
or nutrients or something)
- Nymphea maculata (single bulb never germinated)
- Telanthera roseafolia (original plants; very hardy with sufficient light;
got kind of unkempt and pulled out)
- Vallisneria spiralis (original plants; an attractive and invasive weed;
in the end too weedy for me)
