Cycling-Mountain Biking:
Experience the thrill of
mountain biking at
Trails at the mountain's summit, accessible by chairlift, offer everything from
gentle grades to more challenging single-track. Strong climbers will love the
wooded single-track loops that climb nearly 1,000 of vertical. And for the more
adventurous rider, guides can bring you down from the summit through the trail
network.
Group and Private Lessons available. Call for pricing. Take your bike up the
chairlift and ride the trails at the top. When you've had enough, you and your
bike take the lift back down. Guided tours from the top will be offered three
times daily for those interested in riding down from the summit.
Terrain For Every Ability.... even at the Top Explore the trails at the bottom,
with easy riding for beginners. Gentle open slopes offer great views, and cool
wooded trails wind through evergreen and hardwood forests. Test your endurance
as you climb farther up the mountain. Trails at the base of the
Scenic trails at the summit are accessible from the chairlift. Most of the
trails at the summit are easy rides. More experienced riders will enjoy the
ride from the top with one of our experienced mountain bike guides.
Tips: Mountain-Bike Touring:
To best prepare yourself physically for your tour, ride your mountain bike as
much as possible. If you don't own a mountain bike and you're renting a bike
for the tour, ride your road bike as much as possible before the trip begins.
If you have hills nearby, seek them out to prepare yourself for the ascents
found on many mountain-bike routes.
Because of the upright positioning and the need to occasionally "hop"
your front tire around in rough terrain, mountain-bike riding requires a bit
more upper body strength than does road touring. You would be wise to include
some upper-body work in your training program: push-ups, pull-ups, workouts on
a rowing machine or with weights -- or anything else that gives your arms and
upper torso a good workout.
Opportunities to refill water bottles are very limited along mountain-bike
routes. It is best to carry two to three large water bottles. Participants who
live at low altitudes may want to arrive a couple of days early to adjust to
the altitude. Steep climbs at high elevations can cause shortness of breath and
general fatigue. Be prepared to climb more slowly as you adapt to higher
altitudes.
Short hike for kids:
Sir- Burnt Knob in
That spectacular lookout on Burnt Knob needs be watched for or you'll walk
right past the short trail over to it. Said short trail goes off on the left
within a few dozen yards once you get up on top of the mountain. The child will
enjoy the lookout 'cause you can see your accomplishment and it produces a
feeling of very high elevation.
Going home wind your way over to Route 23a and stop off and climb 15 minutes to

Did you know?
The spelling of Kaatskill
Life is derived from the Dutch. “Kaats” meaning cats, “kill” (“or kil, kyl”)
meaning creeks or streams. When the area was first settled by the Dutch, late
17th early 18th centuries, they encountered many mountain lions and bobcats,
(“Kaats”) as well as an abundance of streams and creeks (“kyl, kil”) “kil” was
later changed to “kill” and “kaats” to Cats. Many waterways in the region still
retain “kill” in their names, such as, Wallkill, Catskill, Kauterskill,
Westkill, Cobleskill.
