”Because it would be colder.”
That is the answer given to our question of the day: Would it be likely or unlikely to snow this winter? We worked on the concepts of what could be true/or false. These activities are not just math related, but also part of reading comprehension and extended oral responses.
In reading, this comprehension development centers on genre: fiction and nonfiction. We discussed on Thursday how some stories are true facts and events (nonfiction) and others are made up and couldn’t really happen (fiction). I shared two books with the kids on pumpkins to demonstrate how these books were nonfiction: It’s Pumpkin Time and Pumpkin Circle. We discussed how the facts in the book taught us about the parts of a pumpkin, the process of a growing pumpkin, the colors of the pumpkin process, and what people do with pumpkins.
A follow up activity to the pumpkin books was giving the kids a paper with various sizes of pumpkins. They needed to color the pumpkins as they grow and then cut them out and glue them in order from smallest to largest. I will share these with you at conferences.
I also wanted to see how well the kids could sort and classify some Halloween shapes. The kids needed to sort them into 5 different colors and then write down the number for each. This helped me see if they could sort and classify as well as follow directions. I will share these with you at conferences.
Our Halloween parties were great fun thanks to all of the volunteers and all of you who contributed on Wednesday. The kids all had a great time and talked about what they did as they walked out the door to go home and trick or treat.
The Jolly Good Times
This week we worked on the two ways to sound the double o sound. We reviewed the vowels and made words that had more than three letters in them.
I am going to be sending home some word box words. These are words that you can review at home. I will have instructions on the page on how to organize and use these at home. There will be a series of these coming throughout the year.
