Day 1, Stage 1,
Saturday, June 25th - Washington, DC to Harrisonburg, VA
Pennsylvania Avenue at Third Street
adjacent to the West Front of the United States Capitol is the location
of the start ceremony for The Greatrace 2005. Today's
route takes racers along the ridge of the Appalachian Mountains and
through Shenandoah National Park.
Day 2, Stage 2, Sunday,
June 26th - Harrisonburg, VA to Ashland, KY
This run is through three states and includes
a stop on the grounds of West Virginia's State Capitol in Charleston
and a finish on Winchester Avenue in Ashland, where a mural commemorates
our most recent stop there, on the 1995 race.
Day 3, Stage 3, Monday, June 27th
- Ashland, KY to Louisville, KY
Today racers travel through Kentucky horse
country, take two laps of Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, and finish the
day at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville.
Day 4, Stage 4, Tuesday, June 28th
- Louisville, KY to Urbana, IL
Competitors cross the Ohio and Wabash Rivers,
travel through Indiana and into Illinois, leading to an overnight stop
in Urbana, home to the main campus of the University of Illinois.
Day 5, Stage 5, Wednesday, June 29th
- Urbana, IL to Gurnee, IL
Today's run takes racers along the grid roads
of Illinois farm country and ends with a mid-afternoon promotion at
Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, a suburb of Chicago.
Day 6, Stage 6, Thursday, June 30th
- Gurnee, IL to Davenport, IA
Racers cross the Mississippi River en route
to an overnight promotion at Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport.
Day 7, Stage 7, Friday, July 1st
- Davenport, IA to West Des Moines, IA
Today racers spend the day traveling through
Iowa's farm country.
Day 8, Stage 8, Saturday, July 2nd
- West Des Moines, IA to Grand Island, NE
Today's run takes contestants across the Missouri
and Platte Rivers to a return lunch stop at historic Haymarket in Lincoln,
Nebraska's capital, and to a finish in downtown Grand Island. Both cities
are former winners of Great American City awards.
Day 9, Stage 9, Sunday, July 3rd
- Grand Island, NE to Westminster, CO
Racers cross the ranch lands of western Nebraska
and eastern Colorado as the Front Range looms in the distance during
the approach to the overnight stop in Westminster, at the base of the
Rocky Mountains.
Day 10, Off day, Monday, July 4th
- Westminster, CO
INDEPENDENCE DAY! A
well-deserved day off. Racers will be repairing vehicles, sleeping,
or visiting Six Flags Elitch Gardens in nearby Denver.
Day 11, Stage 10, Tuesday, July 5th
- Westminster, CO to Rock Springs, WY
This marks the beginning of spectacular scenery
and spirited competition in the high country of the Colorado and Wyoming
Rockies. Racers
cross a mountain pass above 10,800 feet, cross the Continental Divide
twice, and finish the day's run in Rock Springs.
Day 12, Stage 11, Wednesday, July
6th - Rock Springs, WY to Twin Falls, ID
Today's route takes racers across the high
plains of western Wyoming and eastern Idaho, and along and across the
Snake River.
Day 13, Stage 12, Thursday, July
7th - Twin Falls, ID to Walla Walla, WA
The run today takes competitors through three
states, across the Snake River two more times, and finishes in the hometown
of one of our X-cup teams, Walla Walla.
Day 14, Stage 13, Friday, July 8th
- Walla Walla, WA to Puyallup, WA
First day of the Championship Run. This
will be an intense day of rallying through western Washington's farm
and orchard country, along roads that follow a mountain lake in the
Cascade Mountains, and then across the shoulder of Mount Rainier, Washington's
highest peak.
Day 15, Stage 14, Saturday, July
9th - Puyallup, WA to Tacoma, WA
Today's run includes some short but intense
competition sections through the outer fringes of Seattle/Tacoma suburbia,
followed by a lunch stop at Wild Waves/Enchanted Village, a Six Flags
Theme Park in Federal Way. The
Grand Finish will be in the afternoon in the historic theatre district
in downtown Tacoma.
