Comet 17P/Holmes

This comet underwent a outburst on October 24, 2007 that increased it's brightness from 17th magnitude up to approximately magnitude 2.5 on 10/27. 


Comet 17P/Holmes on 10-30-07. Mid-exposure at 03:15 UT (10:15 pm EDT on the 29th). North is up.

Exposure Data:      Telescope and camera: Astro-Physics 140EDF Refractor @ f/7.5 and SBIG ST-10XE CCD with CFW-8A filter wheel

Exposure: An L RGB exposure of (400:750:750:750 seconds), each filter exposure group made up of ten sub exposures.  Location: Saugus, MA

 The comet's slow motion relative to the background stars causes the stars to appear as trails here.


More aggressive processing reveals structures within the coma from the 10-30-07 image. Moderate processing on the left; very aggressive processing on the right reveals radial structures at the expense of some processing artifacts. Processed in MaxIm DL and Adobe Photoshop CS2.
