The Sun

The Sun on 10-28-03

A mosaic of the solar disc made from 5 images with a Philips ToUcam Pro webcam and TeleVue 85 refractor working at f/5 with an Astro-Physics CCD telecompressor

Among the sunspot groups visible are some of the largest seen in recent years. Group AR10488 is just above center, and AR10486 below center. AR10484 is near the limb at the 2 o'clock position. AR10486 was a very active region, emitting several strong solar flares, including one of the strongest solar flares on record on Oct 28, 2003. This flare resulted in aurora displays here on Earth the next day. Another strong flare erupted from this region on the 29th, though less intense than the flare of the 28th, it also produced a strong aurora on the 30th. Several photos of this Oct 30th aurora display can be seen by clicking here

Below are close-ups of AR10486 and AR10488, imaged with a Philips ToUcam Pro webcam and TeleVue85 refractor working at f/14

Solar Prominence on 12-16-04

A Solar Prominence on the limb of the Sun on 12-16-04 at 17:40 UT (12:40 EST). Just below it is another prominence on the Solar disk, appearing as a filament darker than the surrounding surface.

Imaged with a Philips ToUcam Pro webcam through a Coronado PST solar telescope.
