This work is a commission by Antonio Conceição Júnior. Antonio has setup a webpage where one can see the progression of this piece. You can follow this link to see it. If you scroll all the way to the end of that webpage you will see a link to an interview that Antonio conducted with me.

The concept was based on a shape that was hybrid between a tanto and a bowie. The steel selected was cable steel with stainless fittings.

This is the starting piece of cable. 1 inch in diameter.

As the cable is being forge-welded it draws out.

And you end up with something like this. Just over 2 feet long from the starting length of one and a half feet.

I then cut it the bar into 5 smaller bars, stack them up and reweld.

Here is the new stack being welded.

The end product is a bar of about one and a half feet length.

Part of the bar is forged to the desired shape and then rough ground.

After heat treating, the usual endurance tests. Wood chopping.

And paper cutting to test for sharpness and edge retention after chopping.

Then it is finally polished.

A detail of the grain.

A leather sheath with a carved and raised logo is made.

Then dyed black.

The final product.
