Science is the future!

Mission Statement
Four separate disciplines compose the Science Department at Trumbull HS. They include earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics. To insure a well-rounded education, the student is encouraged to sample classes from each discipline. Learning is conducted in a classroom climate with regard to interpersonal and intergroup sensitivity, understanding, and communication between teacher and student. Furthermore, traditional teaching and use of technology focuses on student critical and creative thinking skills beyond the curriculum content of the course. The department encourages learning outside of the class room with homework, web activities, research, science fair projects, and applied real world projects.

Happy Holidays!

Syllabus Biology 200

Miss Ogrodnick/Mrs. Black

Welcome to Biology! We are looking forward to an exciting and fun year packed with exploring a variety of biological topics, including the cell and its processes, genetics, evolution, various classifications, plants, the human body, and much, much more!!  In addition, once again, we will be practicing scientific processes and becoming masters of lab report writing!

 Materials needed in class:

There are four major items that you will need to remember to bring to class with you each day.  These are as follows:

1)       Textbook: Merill- Life Sciences- Glencoe- Mcgraw- Hill Publishing Company

(this book must be covered).  If the book is lost, or suffers any major damages, you will be responsible for the cost of the book at the end of the year.

2)      Three ring binder with loose leaf paper and dividers (this is a must!!) We provide you with a great deal of handouts and articles throughout the year.  Organization is one major key to success in this course.  We will also have periodic notebook checks.

3)      Assignment pad (the agenda pad provided by the school will be sufficient)

4)   Pen and pencil

Reminder: Each time you come to class unprepared, we will take note in the grade book.  After three times, we will deduct points from your grade!  This includes having a pen or pencil.

Grading Criteria:

Grades will be based on the following:

Ø       Notebook checks

Ø       Laboratory Reports

Ø       Internet activities

Ø       Homework

Ø       Quizzes

Ø       Tests

Ø       One project each quarter

Ø       Preparedness and Participation

At the completion of the each marking period, all points will be totaled, and divided by the total number of possible points.

Grading equation: total points earned by student x 100 = grade %

                                       total possible points

Notebook checks: Your notebook is a very important studying resource.  This is your space to write down specific science terms, draw diagrams, or anything else that helps you understand the material.  You will also be asked periodically to write journal entries on specific science topics.  We will be checking your notebooks periodically throughout the course of the year.  If your notebook is not complete, you will not receive full credit.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to come see us for the material that you missed.

Homework: Although you will not have homework every night, you will be given several homework assignments throughout the course of the year.  These assignments will help you to further understand the material that we discussed in class.  Late homework assignments will not be accepted, unless due to an excused absence.  Bottom line: DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!

Course Guidelines:

1)       Safety is the most important guideline when working in a laboratory setting. Students will not be able to participate in laboratory activities until the Flynn science safety sheet is signed by both student and a parent, and returned to us.

2)      All assignments must be handed in on the designated date.  ONCE AGAIN, LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

3)      Students who are absent are responsible for making up all missed assignments.  For those students who are absent for several days, you should meet with one of us to discuss missed material and assignments.  ONCE AGAIN, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COME TO US!

4)      Arriving late for class will affect your grade.  After three unexcused tardies, you will receive a teacher detention, and points will be deducted from you grade. (Review the THS attendance policy)

Classroom Conduct:

The following is a list of rules that WILL be followed in the classroom, with NO exceptions:

1)       Students are expected to be respectful of all in the classroom.

2)      Absolutely NO foul language in the classroom.

3)      Absolutely NO food or drink in the classroom (water is the only exception)

4)      Absolutely no cell phones, palm pilots, portable music players, or handheld video games, etc.

5)      There will be absolutely NO conversations or other social contact while either teacher is talking.

6)      Students will not leave the room unless the teacher has excused them for an emergency or other excused dismissal.

7)      Excessive lavatory use will not be permitted unless you have a diagnosed medical problem.  There will be a sign out sheet in the back of the room to monitor this.

Consequences for violating any of the above conduct rules are as follows:

  • Teacher detention
  • Written referral to house office
  • Phone call home
  • If cell phones are used in the classroom, they will be sent to the house office.
