An opinionated guide to mid-scale eating

Maps * PDF

Worcester has never featured on anyone's map of culinary hot spots. However, that doesn't mean you can't find good food here—it just means you have to know where to look.

Your humble editors, Robin Holly and Jonathan Turner (JT), have bravely taken up the challenge. Assisted by a small corps of dedicated volunteers, and in spite of the very real danger that we might enjoy ourselves, we have diligently sampled a selection of mostly-reasonably-priced, mostly-nearby eateries. We've included a few noteworthy out-of-town spots for the car-enabled. The list is by no means exhaustive; indeed, if you discover another place that's worthy of note, please tell us!

Disclaimer: this is based entirely on personal opinions ... and, truth to tell, we are not fussy about food. As long as it meets some fairly modest quality standards, we generally like it. Your mileage may vary.

So what do we like enough to go back to regularly?

If you're looking for something that's not on here, there are several restaurant clusters in the area:

Medical City is a hospital complex. It has a pizza place and a sandwich shop, at least one of which is open at any time of the day or night. The entrance is on Worcester Center Boulevard, across from the entrance to Applebee's.

Hotel Restaurant: C. P. Whitney's. Good food, typical (inflated) hotel prices. Big breakfast menu. Some vegetarian. Hours: Lunch 11:30a - 1:30p all days; M - Th breakfast 6:30a - 11:00a, dinner 5:30p - 11:00p; F breakfast 6:30a - 11:00a, dinner 5:00p - 11:00p; Sa breakfast 7:30a - 11:00a, dinner 5:00p - 11:00p; Su breakfast 7:30a - 1:00p, dinner 5:30p - 9:00p

Special Note: The Aku-Aku. This is the closest sit-down Chinese restaurant, and we have not reviewed it. Why? Because we had a memorably awful experience, not in the restaurant, but in the so-called "comedy" part of the place. We don't have the nerve to go back; try it at your own risk.
