Kayak Pages

I decided to tackle this project after looking for pictures on building construction. I stumbled onto a photo album of a gorgeous stripper and decided to give it a whirl. I am not an avid kayaker but I do love to work with wood. I have had a lot of experience in cabinet and furniture building but nothing as far as curves and fiberglass. This truly proved to be an adventure.

This kayak is built from plans provided by oneoceankayaks.com . This plan is the 'Expedition Sport". It is a 16.5' single with a skeg type keel (compound curve on the stern).

Vaclav (the owner of oneoceankayaks) is a very knowledgeable individual. He will respond to your e-mail quickly with a very detailed answer!! this is the main reason I choose oneoceankayaks.com for my plans (in addition to the fact that I like the design).

I am providing this information simply from my own experience. When in doubt, please refer to oneoceankayaks.com for further information. I have tried to follow the information set out on his site to the best of my ability. Where necessary, I have modified the process; as you should to, depending on the situation.

Also of note; I should blame my friend John M. (somewhere in Canada) for beginning this project because he is the individual whose picture I found on the Web. Additionally, my wife swears that I am having an affair with a woman named 'Kayak'. She has proclaimed herself a 'Kayak Widow'. This process takes a lot of time. I have not logged my time, though I feel it is a pretty accurate guess to say it is 400 (plus or minus) hours.

Progress thus far.

Finally!! I have done it! It's all done!!

Meanwhile, I have tried to make a paddle. Stay tuned as I will chronicle this as well.

Be patient, as I am too busy building (and taking care of what I have neglected) to update this site in a timely manner. I will update soon, with MANY more photos and tips!!
