Kayak Pages (Cont.)

Here are some photos of a double router setup idea that I got from Petes Konstruction Zone (http://www.pete-and-lisa.com/kayak/kayak_main.htm). I thought the idea was fantastic. After trying to set it up, I found out otherwise.

Unless your strips are ABSOLUTELY uniform in thickness AND width, this setup will NOT work.

I tried my damnedest to accomplish this. When it came to using the setup, everything worked GREAT! This was until I moved to another strip (remember I what I said about the wetness of the wood!!)

I abandoned this idea and went to TWO routers in TWO separate tables. This enabled me to make the necessary adjustments to the width and thickness much easier.

I routed all of the strips as I needed them. This allowed me to cut the narrower strips that I needed as I went as well as protecting the fragile coves of all of the strip during storage.

Here is the table with the bead bit. The small strip in between the feather boards is what I used to adjust the pressure on the strips. Note the nail that acts as a pivot. The clamp on the end of the left hand feather board was adjusted as needed.

This set up worked really well. It enabled me to change setups at a moments notice.

Photo of the table with the cove bit. Note the undercut in the featherboard applying downward pressure. This enabled me to cut the narrower strips (3/8").

Be cautious of the plastic adjustable feather board, as it tends to lift (or raise) up and allow the wood to ride under it.

Close up of the cove set -up. The flexibility of the strip really enhanced the usability of this setup.
