Sensory Integration Treats the Whole Child
All we know about the world comes to us through our
senses.
Sensory Integration is the process by which the brain organizes and
interprets
sensory information. Effective processing of sensory input such as
touch,
movement, sight, sound, and body awareness is foundational to higher
cognitive
functions, learning, and behavior.
A child with sensory integrative disfunction may
exhibit
one or more of the following signs:
- physical clumsiness or coordination problems
- overreactive or underreactive to movement,
touch,
sight or
sound
- very high or very low activity level,
impulsivity
or poor
self-control
- delays in language or motor skills
- frustrations or a lack of progress in academic
skills
- distractibility or attention disorder
A child suspected of having a sensory integrative
disorder
can be evaluated by a qualified Occupational Therapist or Physical
Therapist.
If therapy is recommended, the child will be guided through activities
designed for successful, organized responses to sensory input. Sensory
integration therapy does not focus on the aquisition of skills, but
rather
on the neurological foundation for skill development.
The Sensory Integration and
Praxis
Test (SIPT)
Can be
administered by our Occupational
Therapists
