Organic farming is --
- Farming without chemicals. On a conventional farm, chemicals perform many useful tasks including pest management, weed control, and growth enhancement. But they stay on the food, in the ground, and in the water. Most are not intended for eating, and some are truly dangerous. For the consumer and for the farmer, organic farming means Good Food -- vegetables free of chemical residues and meat and eggs free of added hormones and antibiotics.
- Keeping a self-sustaining cycle of life. By rotating crops in fields and beds and animals on pastures, harmful insects and plant diseases are kept in control and soil is kept rich. The open-pollinated seed of a wide variety of heirloom plants, local to the farm's soil and climate, is saved and cultivated, widening the earth's range of plants and animals well beyond the few and sterile commercially produced plants that will not reproduce the following year. Planning and management of ongoing and renewing resources is Good Farming.
- Practicing resource conservation
and
improvement. Organic farmers respect the living
nature of soil with healthy microorganisms. We work to keep Good
Land and clean water by cycling
nutrients in and keeping contaminants out. We conserve energy, recycle
just about everything, and are working to add solar and wind power. We try to do our part for
the global environment as stewards of our little
piece of the earth.
