Members include technical writers, editors, graphic designers, Web designers, translators, videographers, multimedia artists and others whose work involves making technical information available to people who need it. The STC publishes a monthly magazine and a quarterly technical journal. It has many local chapters and presents a yearly conference.

Their stated mission is to develop and recognize the proficiency of their members and advocate the use of Human Performance Technology. The organization organizes an annual conference and expo as well as other educational events like the Institute. They publishing books books and periodicals, and support research.

IEEE Professional Communication Society

This organization is a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.(IEEE). The SIG focuses on developing skills for engineers and technical communicators in written and oral presentation.
