Tattoo grabs three awards from
Connecticut
Society of Professional Journalists
The Tattoo edged out
professional journalists from across the state to capture three awards in the
annual writing contest sponsored by the Connecticut Society of
Professional Journalists.
Tattoo
writer Shaina Zura won the arts and entertainment category for her review of a
Marilyn Manson concert entitled “Fans more shocking than Manson.”
Jessica Majerus
garnered a first place award for her editorial cartoon “In memory of
Columbine” that ran as part of The Tattoo’s extensive school violence
coverage in the wake of the massacre at a
Colorado
high school.
In addition, The
Tattoo grabbed a second place award in the in-depth coverage category for its
work on school violence.
The “Kids who
kill” package included stories, pictures and cartoons from 12 Tattoo staff
members: Amanda Lehmert, Chantelle Garzone, Collin Seguin, Courtney Pendleton,
Hila Yosafi, Jessica Majerus, Jessica Norton, Joe Wilbur, Kathleen Haynes, Laura
Lindstrom, Merissa Mastropiero and Shaina Zura.
The annual contest
drew more than 1,000 entries in numerous categories. They were judged by
journalists in Massachusetts, Maine, Washington, New Jersey and Florida.
The Tattoo is the
only student newspaper to win a Connecticut SPJ award. It has now
garnered awards in the contest for four straight years.
