Welcome
Welcome to my website. I am no longer the Head Coach, but will be working with Rich Griffith as Associate-Head Coach. I am trying to open my life up to new opportunities, but am still deeply committed to youth rowing.
Questions should be directed toward Head Coach Rich Griffith: rich@blusto.com.
I will be continuing to do this site in an attempt to keep you, the rowers and families up-to-date as to what is going on with rowing at Pioneer and to help give you a litte history of the program. This is an unofficial site, but since I have some control, it will be easier for me to add or subtract from it as I see fit.
The official Pioneer Crew site is http://www.pioneercrew.org
Thanks for joining me. Row Hard and Row Long.

Ann Arbor Pioneer H.S. Crew
*** Spring Season Wrap Up ***

Pioneer Booty
Ann Arbor, Michigan - The sensational spring season has come to a close and the coaching staff seems to say over and over again that this was the best season by far, yet this one just might be. The Team won the Tire Trophy, the Grand Rapids Trophy, the Hebda Trophy (State Championship), the Wyandotte Trophy, the Horton Cup Trophy and brought home the Second Place in the Midwest Trophy. We went to Canada and came home with two podium finishes. We sent a Crew to the US Rowing Youth Nationals. The Boys and Girls Teams have never done this well together. A fantastic job by the coaching staff and a total commitment by the team has made this possible. I believe there might have been some doubt when the season started that the Women's Team would have a hard time recovering from the graduation of five rowers from the first varsity eight, yet we met the challenge and in many way exceeded our goals. The Men's Team came into their own and established themselves as the Team to beat. We continue to raise the bar for our rowers and they meet the challenge with hard work and dedication to the Team framework. We also owe a lot to the families and businesses that have given us support.

PIONEER'S SECOND OVERALL AT MIDWEST

Pioneer's keep bring them home by the truckload.
Cincinnati, Ohio - On Saturday and Sunday the Ann Arbor Pioneer High School Crew traveled to Lake Harsha in Cincinnati, Ohio for the Midwest Scholastic Championship Regatta. Fifty-one Teams gathered from twelve states in the Midwest Region to establish the Champion Crews and Champion Teams. Races were held under sunny skies and temperatures in the 80's on Saturday for the Heats and Semi events, while Sunday action brought a cross wind under slightly cooler conditions. Saturday was a grueling 12 hours of racing to establish who would be in the Grand Final events on Sunday. The Pioneer's entered 15 events and moved 13 Crews to the Finals. Crew brought home medals in 10 of the 13 finals.
For the fifth consecutive week the Pioneer Crew has brought home Trophies in Regattas entered. The Midwest Scholastic Championship was a great culmination to this achievement. The Team placed 2 nd overall against 51 teams from the Midwest and the Women's Team place 3 rd in their division. It is hard to recall another team from the state of Michigan that has done this in the recent past.
Coach Rich Griffith's men have done great things this season and now have an opportunity to take a crew to the US Rowing Youth National Championship in June. Coach Michael Dove's women have been consistent with great depth. Head Coach Griffith has brought together a coaching staff that is dedicated to winning with pride and respect. The Pioneer Crew has made a huge mark on the rowing community in Michigan and the Midwest Region this year.
We continue to say it with pride. "GO PIONEERS"

Crews start the day with launch from dock.

PIONEER'S CRUSH OTHER TEAMS DREAMS

2007 Wyandotte High Schools Regatta Champions
Wyandotte, Michigan - On Saturday May 5, 2007 the Pioneer Crew competed in the 36 th Annual Wyandotte High Schools Regatta. This two-day event included schools from Canada, Ohio and Michigan. Heats were held on Friday and Saturday morning, with finals being held on Saturday afternoon. Conditions varied but the prevailing wind from the Northeast made for choppy water and a strong advantage to crews in lane 6, which was closest to the island across from the channel on the Detroit River. The Pioneer's placed boats in all the finals of the events that they entered.
With the Senior Prom being held on Friday and SAT testing on Saturday the Pioneer's had depleted their ranks, yet the depth of this years team showed what kind of character they had established. Rowers stepped into boats that they normally would not have rowed in and came away with big wins for the team. The coaching staff was pleasantly surprised and happy to see rowers come away with such big wins. The hard work and trust that each rower would come thru when called on is a great testament to the character of the individuals on this team.
This is the third week in a row that the Pioneer's have won the combined points championship and the women's point championship. The women's Team won the Brutto Cup and the overall Mayors Trophy went to the whole Team. This is an amazing accomplishment for the Pioneer's. The Pioneer Crew is the most dominate team in Michigan at this time with dreams of big wins at the Midwest Championship and the Canadian Championship.

2007 Combined State Champions
Wyandotte, Michigan - On Saturday April 28, 2007 all the Rowing Teams from Michigan gathered at the Wyandotte Boat House for Hebda Cup Regatta and bragging rights for the State Title. The day began under cloudy skies and cool weather and made way to sunshine and blue skies by the afternoon. The morning heats were 1000 meters with qualifying boats moving on to the afternoon finals. The Pioneer's qualified boats in every event they entered.
The wind began to pick up by noon and the regatta officials made the call for 1000 meter finals to hopefully avoid cancellation of events. With the races shortened strategy played an important role in many crews fortunes. The Pioneer's have been training for 1500 meter races and had not spent as much time working on sprints at this point of the season. Some of the crews were hampered by their ability to get a quicker stroke rating in the shorter races and were overtaken my opposing crews in the last 200 meters.
The fact that we had crews in almost every race played in our favor. As long as we placed boats in the top three places we were able to accumulate points. Winning crews received Gold Medals and a Plaque representing State Champion Crews. A Women's Point Trophy and Men's Point Trophy along with a Combined Team Trophy were awarded at the end of the day.
The Pioneer women received the Women's Point Trophy for the second year in a row while the Pioneer men placed second to Orchard Lake Saint Mary this year. The Pioneer's received the combined points trophy accumulating 62 points and bragging rights to overall State Champions. Well done, Pioneers.

Grand Rapids, Michigan - The Pioneer Crew traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday to compete in the 12 th Annual Grand Rapids Regatta. Nearly 800 rowers from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois took part in 19 races on the Grand River. The invitational was dominated by Ann Arbor Pioneer, which won trophies for most male and female points accumulated throughout the day, but a few area teams had solid efforts as well.
The Pioneer Crew enjoyed the opportunity to test themselves against the western schools in preparation for the anticipated competition at the Hebda Cup for State Championship bragging rights.
The day started bright, clear and crisp and by mid day warm weather and sunshine. Heats were held in the morning and Finals in the afternoon. The racing was held against a strong head current with favorable lanes being 1 and 2 nearest the shore. The morning heats ran quickly with the Pioneers winning and placing crews in every event they entered. The Pioneers had qualified for 16 events of the 19 total races. A short break in the action around noon gave time to re-gather for the anticipated final events. We quickly jumped off with a gold medal performances, one right after another. In all the Pioneers racked up 11 gold medals and one silver medal.
The Pioneer Boys team won the Points Trophy for the event and Pioneer Girls Team won the Points Trophy. This was the first time the Boys have accomplished this and the second time the Girls have been able to do this. *** Pioneer vs Rockford ***
Saturday April 14, 2007
Rockford, Michigan - The Pioneer High School Crew began the spring season campaign with a dual meet against Rockford High School on Saturday. The weather was brisk and so was the racing. The Pioneers with 80 rowers on the Team this year used this meet as a tune up. Crews felt out their race strategy and were able to see what kind of adjustments they would need to make. The Pioneers came away with 17 wins and only 2 loses for the day. For the third year in a row the Pioneer Crew has brought home the "The Tire" Trophy. The annual dual between Rockford and Pioneer brings out the best in rowing, a friendly rivalry and great sportsmanship between the rowers and families of the two teams.

FALL SEASON 2006
Fall Season 2006 full story....Another farewell tour. The complete edition.
Dove's Quick Catch News
Saturday November 11, 2006
Ann Arbor, MI. - On Saturday November 11, 2006 two junior rowers from the Ann Arbor Pioneer High School set out to cover 100,000 meters in less than 8 hours at the Community Boathouse in Bandemer Park. The rowers, Julia Darnton and Emily Smalligan are varsity rowers on the Pioneer Crew. They covered the distance in 7:35:19.7 at an average split of 2:16.6. They had set a goal of averaging 2:20.0 and were well below that pace. Set up with music and food they each rowed 10,000 meters at a time and then switched off. They started at about 9:30 am in the morning and finished a little past 5:00 pm. Tired, but happy that they had achieved what they set out to do. A great sense of accomplishment made it all worthwhile.

The monitor shows the results.

Spring Season 2006 full story...We Rock! State Champs, Midwest Champs, Podium Canada, Podium at Youth Nationals. I believe the success we have achieved was not an accident, but a designed plan that was executed through commitment and preparation. It has sometimes taken its toll on those that were not quiet ready to enter the house. I often refer to SUCCESS as the HOUSE , and as I have said before I wish more of us could enter it, but it remains an exclusive group..
Fall Season 2005 full story...Well, I am back for another season. To be truthful, I am having a hard time adapting to not being the Head Coach. I do enjoy coaching the crews that I have though. Finding myself constantly trying to adjust my way of approaching things. Frustraition at not being able to complete my vision is a reality. A new VISION will emerge and I will re-invent myself. Stay tuned!
Spring Season 2005 full story... The Aloha Season for me. Can't wait....
Fall Season 2004 full story...Passion and Balance: What is it that drives an individual to put in so many hours of practice for less than half an hour on race day in the fall and about seven minutes in the spring? What drives an individual to give up sleep and social activities to take part in this thing called rowing? It is the absolute passion that we have for this sport. You must learn to love training; each stroke is it's own reward. ......
Spring Season 2004 full story.. A journey of 1000 miles begins with one step. And so our journey began 4 years ago with little steps and along the way we have traveled to many places. Our journey has not always been together. Sometimes we have strayed; some have fallen to the wayside. Others have stayed the course, weathered the storms and now we are at another crossroad. I for one don't believe this will be the last we see of each other. Our thoughts will always bring us back together. Our love for one another and the sport will keep us bonded. We have done this together and nobody can ever take this moment from us. ......
Fall Season 2003 full story...A season of ups and downs.
A season of highs and lows, A season of progress.
A season of frustration, A season of hope.
A season of living, A season of love for me
