Upper Weyanoke is located in Virginia along the banks of the James River a few miles above Jamestown and is one of the earliest plantations in the United States. With a long and rich history, it is also one of the most beautiful properties along the James. The current residence was erected in the seventeenth century as a stronghold against Indian assault after the Powhatan uprising in 1622. Although no one knows how many garrison houses may have been built after the massacres, Upper Weyanoke is the only one that remains. This small dwelling, laid in Flemish Bond, has the original fireplace in the English basement and wooden floors with hand wrought nails. Two plain rectangular rooms make up the first floor, and an enclosed staircase leads to two small bedrooms upstairs. Another set of stairs leads to the kitchen below. Although not as grand as other plantations along the river, Upper Weyanoke is a product of a simpler time and manages to trade abundantly on its closeness to nature and the feeling that history, and even time, have stood still here. Anyone who spends time at this little garrison house will be impressed by its beauty and quiet dignity, and over the centuries it has been lovingly cared for by several families.
