What is Model United Nations? Well, there are several answers. The
United Nations Association of the United States of America, gives a
good
explanation. It is an opportunity for students to "step into
the shoes of ambassadors from U.N. member states to debate current issues
on the organization's vast agenda." Their comments continue with
some details of what that means.
Glenelg High School Model UN is a very interesting group of students
who are interested in discovering how countries are able to solve some
of those conflicts that we study in history class. Additionally, they
work to prepare themselves to attend a Model UN conference during the
year. At this point, we have attended one local, college-hosted conference
each year. We are hoping to have the resources and the interest to expand.
In 2004 we hosted a Model UN simulation in the 9th grade US History
Honors and G/T classes. We hope to be able to host a local conference
in the future.
What can you gain from Model UN? Besides the obvious answer of fun
and camaraderie, there are important skills that can last a lifetime
and even encourage a future career. Learn to be a problem solver, to
negotiate, to think and speak on your feet. And most important for those
of us planning to live in this global world, learn how it all works
- and sometimes doesn't!
