In a rematch of last years Western region playoff shootout in South Ogden, a 52-30 Hawk victory, the 14-0 South Ogden Rhino-Raiders traveled to the 13-0 Eastside Hawks for NAFL playoff action Saturday night. A dominating Hawk ground attack, combined with five Rhino-Raiders turnovers, 2 of which were returned for Hawk scores, equated to 41-7 whalloping.
FIRST QUARTER
Despite blanket coverage by CB Cedric Mars, WR James Owens was able to come down with this catch for a 30 yard gain.
Damon Greenberry goes up and over a Hawk CB for an 18 yard gain. Stireman rolled away from pressure from Jeremiah Pharms and Reggie Hargrove to find Owens in the back of the endzone but he couldn't hold on.
..... The powerful Rhino-Raider offense opened the game at they're own 22 and began marching on the formidable Hawk defense. They needed just 9 plays to march down to the Hawk 2 yard line. QB Dave Stireman was 2/3 for 48 yards, with the big play being a 30 yard strike to #5 James Owens. David Fiefia rushed 6 times for 23 yards on the march. The Hawk defense was impenetrable with their backs to their own goal line. After a motion penalty pushed the Rhino-Raiders back to the 7, a 3rd and goal swing pass to Rob Morse was immediately stuffed for a yard loss by Joel Robnett. With their kicker on a pheasant hunting trip in North Dakota, they were forced to go for it on 4th down, and a Fiefia sweep only gained 2 yards before being stuffed by LBs Mark Riley and Jeremiah Pharms. The 13 play drive consumed 9:16 of the 1st quarter, but netted zero points for the Rhino-Raiders.

LB Levine Tupe looked to have EJ Ash at the goal line but Ash powered through the tackle and went for a 6 yard gain.
DE Bill Nebeker blindsides Dixon and causes a fumble that was recovered by DE Shane Dooley.
.....Starting from from their own 4, the Hawk offense went to work. Hawk workhorse EJ Ash shrugged off a big hit by LB Levine Tupe at the goalline to out the the 10, and then a few plays later he powered through more tackles on a 32 yard jaunt taking the ball across midfield. On first down from the Rhino-Raider 47, Nebeker blindsided Dixon forcing a fumble that was recovered by DE Shane Dooley at the Hawk 49. On 2nd and 10 with a Hawk defender in his face, Stireman threw a long down the sideline that was intercepted by CB Jamley Austin and returned 60 yards for the games opening score with 3:10 remaining in the first quarter.
Damon Greenberry made a spectular play on this pass but CB Terrance Ivory was able to pull the ball out for an incompletion.

.....
A deep kickoff pinned the Rhino-Raiders at their own 17, and 3 Josh Christensen runs could only net 6 yards. After opening the game with a 9 minute, 13 play - 80 yard drive, the Rhino-Raider offense could only follow it up with a 3 minute, 3 play - 6 yard drive.
Under pressure, QB Dave Stireman threw a long out to his left only to have the ball intercepted by #21 CB Jamley Austin. Austin went down the right sideline before cutting across the field behind the blocking of Joel Robnett and Jeremiah Pharms.
SECOND QUARTER

.
Chris Dixon unloads a bullet to Derrick Smith, who caught the ball among 3 defenders and was able to reach it across the line before being pushed out of bounds.
.....Punting from their own 18 on the first play of the 2nd quarter, Nate Cone's kick was received by Mike Rigell at midfield and he returned the ball deep into Rhino-Raider territory. A penalty nullified most of the return and the Hawk offense started their 2nd possession at the Rhino-Raider 48. Four consecutive carries by EJ Ash netted 46 yards and moved the ball down to the 2. A big sack by Jay Tupa on 2nd and goal pushed the Hawks back to the 8. Chris Dixon found Derrick Smith on the down and out at the goal line, and Smith was just able to break the plane before being pushed out of bounds by two Rhino-Raider defenders. Craig Hawley's PAT gave the Hawks a 14-0 lead with 10:30 remaining in the half.

David Fiefia bounces a draw outside for an 8 yard gain.
Left: Greenberry made a spectacular play in leaping over the defender for an 10 yard gain. Right: Another great catch by Greenberry for 11 yards and another first down.
.....The Hawk kickoff went out of bounds setting up the Rhino-Raiders at their own 40. They went on a 7 minute, 12 play - 33 yard drive but again came away with no points. Stireman went 3/5 for 30 yards, and Fiefia added 12 yards on 3 carries as the Rhino-Raiders got as deep as the Hawk 16 before being pushed back 5 yards by a penalty. Then again, in the shadow of their own goal post, the Hawks defense stepped up. MLB Aaron Wardrip stuffed Fiefia for a loss on 1st down. On 2nd, CB Terrance Ivory broke up a pass across the middle and nearly came away with a spectacular interception. DE Jackie Triplett sacked Stireman for a 5 yard loss on 3rd, and pressure from DE Shay Dean on 4th and 21 forced an incompletion.

Terrance Ivory heads down the sideline for a score.
.....Taking over at their own 27 with 3:11 left, the Hawks quickly moved the ball across midfield with a 25 yard reverse by Mike Rigell. On 3rd and 2 from the Rhino-Raider 44, DE Shane Dooley and DT Walter Fiefia combined to sack Dixon for a 7yard loss. Jose Moreno's punt was fair caught by Damon Greenberry at the 18 with 1:09 left in the half. On first down, CB Terrance Ivory jumped the long out pattern and returned the ball 35 yards for another Hawk score with :59 remaining.

Josh Christensen heads up the middle for 12 yards.
LB Misionare Tiololo sacks Stireman.
.....The Rhino-Raider offense ran out the clock by pounding RB Josh Christensen up the gut for gains of 12 and 21 yards sandwiched around a Misionare Tiololo sack of Stireman for a 7 yard loss. Despite holding the for over 21 minutes of the first half, and running 34 first half plays (144 yards) to just 16 plays (119 yards) for the Hawk offense, the Rhino-Raiders trailed 21-0 at intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
WR Syii Tucker heads down the sideline for a long gain. Only a diving tackle by MLB Mike Mecham prevented a long score.
Brian Carter split the defense for another Hawk score.
.....A 25 yard kickoff by Jimmy McCollum set up the Hawks at their own 38. Chris Dixon went right to work hitting Syii Tucker for 28 yards, and then RB Kevin Prosser for 9 more. Three EJ Ash runs gained 19 yards and moved the ball down to the 6. Dixon made it look easy connecting with WR Brian Carter on a quick slant between 2 defenders for the score. Craig Hawley's PAT put the Hawks up 28-0.

CB Jamley Austin tipped this ball just enough to make it bounce of the receiver's chest back to him. He returned the ball 41 yards, deep into Rhino-Raider territory.
The defender appeared to have tight coverage until Chandler accelerated away to make the catch and stumble into the endzone.
....James Owens 31 yard kickoff return started the Rhino-Raiders at their own 37. A personal foul on the Hawks moved them across midfield. On first down from the 46, the Hawk cornerbacks struck again. Pressure from LB Misionare Tiololo forced Stireman to throw early and Jamley Austin picked off his second pass of the game. Austin headed up the Rhino-Raider sideline dodging would be tacklers every step of the way. After reversing direction to run out to the grasp of 3 Rhino-Raiders, Austin ran out of gas and was caught from behind by James Owens at the Rhino-Raider 28 with 8:54 left in the 3rd.
....WR Antonio Chandler gained 5 yards on a reverse before being stopped by MLB Justin Oswald. On 2nd down, Dixon went over the top to Chandler down the left sideline for another Hawk score. The Hawks needed just :53 seconds to capitalize on Austin's 48 yard interception return.

.
....The teams traded 3 and out possessions setting up the Rhino-Raiders at their own 32 with 3:33 left in the 3rd. Three Christensen runs netted 11 yards and a Hawk personal foul helped their cause. On 3rd and 6 from the Hawk 47, Stireman hit Greenberry for 17 yards as the 3rd quarter expired.
FOURTH QUARTER
DE Reggie Hargrove was in Stireman's face as he lofted a bomb to Trevor Bell, but Terrance Ivory had great position and came down with his 2nd interception of the night.

.
....All night long Stireman had been able to loft fade type passes to his athletic receivers down the sideline and count on them making an aggressive play on the ball. The Rhino-Raider receivers were masterful at applying just enough contact to get separation, but not enough to be called for offensive pass interference. On the first play of the 4th quarter, Stireman lofted a deep pass down the right sideline for only to have CB Terrance Ivory resist the receiver's attempt at getting separation and outjump him for the ball. Ivory was down by contact at the 5 after his leaping interception.
....Pressure by SS Jay Tupe forced Dixon's first down pass to go incomplete, and LB Jake Phippen stopped EJ Ash after a 5 yard gain on 2nd. Pressure from DT Reggie Jones forced an errant pass down the middle and it was intercepted at the Hawk 35 by FS Tim Atkinson.

.
....Starting at the Hawk 35, Stireman connected with Trevor Bell for 16 yards and then Damon Greenberry for 14 more. On first down from the 7, Josh Christensen found a big hole off of left tackle and cut back up inside and wasn't touched until the goal line. A big hit separated him from the ball but he had already crossed the plane. With their regular kicker busy duck hunting, Christensen stayed on to kick the PAT and nailed a line drive just over the cross bar.

.
....The fresh legs of backup RB Kevin Prosser pounded out runs of 11, 15 and 7 yards before he was stuffed for a 4 yard loss by Mike Pierce and Jay Tupe. A Rhino-Raider penalty gave back the lost yardage and then on 3rd and 2 from the Rhino-Raider 39, QB Joe Brazier just missed Jimmy McCollum on a bomb down the right sideline. On 4th down Brazier avoided the pressure of LB Levine Tupe only to be sacked by Jake Phippen with over 8:00 remaining.

.
....On frist down the Hawk CBs teamed up for the their 5th takeaway. From his own 42, Stireman hit Greenberry on the slant, but CB Terrance Ivory knocked the ball loose as he was tackling Greenberry from behind. Jamley Austin scooped up the ball and returned deep into Rhino-Raider territory, but a penalty nullified most of the return and the Hawks took over just a yard shy of the original line of scrimmage.

....Two Prosser runs netted on 3 yards and the 2nd was nullified by a holding penalty pushing the Hawks back to midfield. Pressure by Reggie Jones forced Brazier to throw the ball right to LB Justin Oswald in the flat but he couldn't make the catch. Oswald could only laugh as one of his teammates yelled, "You would have caught it if it was a twinkie!" On 3rd down pressure from LB Manu Taeoalii forced and incompletion. Jose Moreno came on to punt but was roughed, giving the ball back to the Hawk offense at the Rhino-Raider 35 with just under 6:00 remaining. RB Kevin Prosser made the Rhino-Raiders pay for the error as he went off right tackle and busted through the defense and then outraced the secondary back the left corner of the endzone for the final score of the game.

....The Rhino-Raiders muffed the ensuing kickoff and recovered the ball at their own 11. Christensen powered up the middle for 13 yards on first down. On the next play, Stireman dropped back and threw the ball right to LB Jeremiah Pharms. He started heading up field while still trying to get a hold of the ball. Before Pharms could get control he was nailed by Trevor Bell and the ball richocheted to David Fiefia for a 10 yard gain. That was the last Rhino-Raider first down and they ended up punting with 2:22 left and Brazier and the Hawks ran out the last 2:00 of the game.
