There are three main types of aircraft used by the airlines, Heavy Jets, Regional Jets and Turbo Props.  Heavy Jets are those capable of trans-continental  and inter-continental flight, while the others are used for shorter tips of a few hundred miles.  Generally only the Heavy Jets are equipped with pressurized and climate controlled forward cargo holds necessary to carry animals.   Regional Jets and Turbo Prop types are not usually so equipped and therefore can not carry animals in their cargo hold.  However each airline orders aircraft to their own specifications so there may be instances where one airline can carry animals on their smaller aircraft while another can not, when in doubt, check with the airline in question.  There are many different aircraft in each category, a few examples of each are shown.
