Freedom for Iraq!

Well, I'm not going to write a lot, since so much is being written elsewhere, but I had to say "congratulations!" to all Iraqis, everywhere, on this historic day. I am pleased that the voter turnout was high, that the terrorists weren't able to make good on their threats to disrupt the election, and that Iraq has taken such an important step towards a free, democratic and secure nation.

So many have paid such a high price so that this day would happen. So many lives have been lost, so many people have been wounded and maimed, so much money has been spent. I can think of only one thing that would be worth it all, and that is freedom and democracy for an entire nation of millions of people. So, despite all the carping by the "nattering nabobs of negativity," the sacrifice will not be in vain. Iraq has held her first ever free elections! It is a day to rejoice and to be glad, and to thank all of those who have played a part in making this day such a success: the election was on time, with high voter turnout, far less violence than predicted, and Iraqis dancing in the streets for joy.

Certainly, much work is left to be done, and ultimate victory is not yet achieved, but those facts don't detract at all from the fact that this is a joyous day, most of all for Iraqis, but also for the whole world. Freedom is on the march, and those that oppose it are on the wrong side, morally and historically. Today is a day, like the day that the Berlin Wall fell, when those of us on the right side can take heart that we will prevail.
