Dakota
Dakota was found on 9/25/05 on my friend's parents' porch in Maryland. She was emaciated and weak. She staggered and collapsed when she tried to walk. She was able to eat and drink a small amount. They kept her safe and warm until they could take her to the vet on 9/26/05. The vet immediately admitted her for a few days. She was only 3 lbs. when she was admitted and the vet estimated Dakota to be between 6 months - 1 year old. I picked up Dakota on
10/1/05.
She was so thin. Her eyes were terribly
runny and she looked sickly to me. I placed Dakota in a
foster
home with a co-worker because I did not think she would do well in my
home with so many other animals. There is simply too much
commotion and she
needed time in a quiet place to recover. My co-worker did a
great
job offering Dakota a quiet
and caring place to start her recovery. She took Dakota to the vet and
they gave her eye drops for her runny eyes and vaccinated her.
Dakota
started to blossom in my co-workers care. She was very affectionate,
gentle, and playful. She put another pound while staying with my
co-worker. Because my co-worker was not allowed to have pets in her
apartment she felt it was safer to return her to me after a
close
call with her landlord.
Dakota was returned to me in November of 2005. Dakota has a gorgeous thick, long gray coat and beautiful gold colored eyes. Her coat will require occasional brushing to keep knots out of her coat. She has an adorable meow and is VERY playful. Dakota doesn't take long to warm up, but she's very independent. She loves to be petted and can be very affectionate, but she needs to feel safe first. She needs a home with cat experience. Dakota LOVES to play with feather toys or anything that dangles or can be chased. She is fascinated by laser toys. She will wear herself out playing with those toys, which is good, because she's become quite plump while living with us. We are closely monitoring her food intake now. Dakota is very selective regarding cats she chooses to get along with. She would really prefer to be the only cat. She can get along with mellow dogs as long as they respect her space. I will catch her rubbing on my dogs legs sometimes. I would love to see Dakota go to a quiet home where she can get lots of playtime and attention. Dakota is not very happy here because there are too many animals. She will flourish where she can be an only pet and she will become more social and friendly in an environment where she can relax. She was extremely gentle, playful, and affectionate in her foster home. She needs to have that opportunity again. Dakota does have a chronic eye discharge possibly due to the herpes virus. We have not done the actual tests for herpes, but my vet is confident that her eye discharge is from herpes. She gets eye drops and Lysine when her eyes get runny. My vet thinks this will get better in a less stressful environment., but she will always require the drops and lysine when her eyes act up. Dakota is spayed, fully vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for fleas. She tested negative for FeLV and FIV. This page last updated on 6/2/07. |
