Sales of the Pacific Northwest Organ Book 2007 were brisk at Convention and the entire supply was exhausted by the last day, so Walter Krueger agreed to re-print a small number to fill paid orders taken at Convention. So, if you didn't make it to Convention, you will be happy to know that you can still obtain a copy of Pacific Northwest Organ Book 2007! Thereafter this publication is put to rest by agreement with the composers who offered their music gratis and the editor who offered his services gratis. Twelve Pacific Northwest composers submitted print-worthy compositions with all 5 states of Region VIII represented! This book was designed as a handsome limited-edition convention souvenir. It is printed on sturdy paper with a coil binding so it will lie flat on your keyboard desk.
What’s inside? A variety of works, witnessing the many styles and kinds of organ music played and produced here in the Northwest. One composition, by published composer David Stech, appears tto be in the later style of Brahms: warm subtly shifting chords against a flowing hymn tune. A dramatic Psalm 23 by established Oregon composer June Kirlin, is reminiscent of works in the psalm interpretation genre by Herbert Howells and others. Jerry van der Pol's "Fantasia on a Hymn Tune by John Goss" adds a ceremonial dimension. Four composers (Parkinson, Wicks, Porter, Krueger) offer usable, yet concert-quality "Variations" on standard hymn tunes ("Salzburg," "Dix," "Lasst Uns Erfreuen," and "Wer nur den Lieben Gott"), common in so many denominations these days, and showing a veritable kaleidoscope of styles and treatments.
The "Navy Hymn" is given a fresh and extended dramatic treatment by well-known composer Dan Miller (ASCAP). A brand new hymn tune, "Elevation," by our own Scott Werdebaugh (for "All Hail the Power") is given here it's world premiere with an original variation. There is also a clever "Diapason Voluntary and Fugue" by well-known and published artist, David Dahl. Organists can always use a fresh "Trumpet Tune," and Howard Stoess has provided excellent new material in this genre. Lastly, but not least, Lynn Petersen offers a touching work in remembrance of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, "His Eye is on the Sparrow." This was performed at the convention by Nancy Cooper (who commissioned the work) as an encore to the great applause of all.
