Condolences For Chile

The day Chile died, June 18, 1998, Harold posted a note to the Vizsla List that read:

"Chile passed away this afternoon. He died peacefully during his
afternoon nap with his favorite toy, a stuffed rabbit next to him."

The following notes are posts via the internet we recieved as condolences on our loss of Chile. It has taken me a long time to finally be able to post these, but I wanted to share what others said about Chile.

So sorry to learn of your loss of Chile. He was truly a great ambassador
of our breed. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Time really does
heal. I am looking forward to the day Chile is inducted into our VCA hall
of fame. I believe he deserves this honor.

Maria,
I gasped out loud when I read your post. I only saw Chile once, at the
Nationals many years ago when you did your dance with the hot peppers
for the parade of champions. I *loved* his personality. He was such a
special dog--I can only imagine what you must be feeling right now, and
I am so sorry. You will all be be in my prayers.

Maria & Harold,

We're so sorry to hear about Chile. I can tell from your message that
sending it was a very tough thing to do, and I applaud your courage for
doing it. Though I never met Chile, I know he was a special dog and can
never be replaced. I only hope that you allow all of those who are thinking
of and praying for you to share a little piece of your sadness so that we
might lighten the load.

Subject: Maria and Harold's Chile Bean
From: Melissa Thomas

By now you have read Harold's post. Maria and Harold's Chile is gone but his spirit remains so close.

Three of my best friends are sleeping quietly at my feet. Cooper is so sensitive and is just a bit worried about me. He has washed my face several times in the past hour. Sandia and Amigo just seem to know that it's time to be settled.

Chile became sick about 4 weeks ago. Maria learned that he would have but just a short time, and so I spent my Thursdays driving up to visit with Maria and Chile…and the rest of the gang. Each visit I found myself memorizing every bit of him, and he returning my quizzical expressions with, "it's okay". One Thursday morning he chased gophers, the following week we indulged ourself with ice cream - he eating the cone first, and last Thursday we went for a ride and just sat a studied one another…lost in conversations with Maria... remembering all the crazy exploits we've shared.

Maria and I have shared so many things with Chile... his success in obedience, the field, and agility; completing 12 AKC titles and earning 89 OTCh points. I can remember the day he earned his 1st point and the 89th.. each was a Celebration! I remember popping open the bottles of champagne when the MH was completed and the jubilation of the MX last summer. Chile had talent, and his teamwork and devotion was shared by Maria; that inspired the successes I have had with my Chile pups.

Boy did he like to fish.. or at least he figured that's why we waded out into the water. He thought all parks had gophers, and it was his job to find them. He could make me laugh and cry. Once he accidentally gave me a horrific black eye! When it came to the "new trainees" in the field…he _always_ pushed them hard... if one of the youngsters was braced with him and wanted a bird.. they had to get down to work and work hard!

Last Thursday Maria asked me to say goodbye to Chile. I just couldn't and afterwards this is what I told her...I know that you wanted me to say goodbye to Chile today. I could not. He and I had a good talk/hug…but I just can't say goodbye. Wouldn't you know it... darn that little guy, true to his nature, had to run down the hill to see me off. I know that you really may not have wanted him trecking up and down the hill…but he seemed to insist....he knew I'd have a treat for him.

It was extremely difficult to see that he was the last dog to trot back up the hill. Standing near the edge of the rock wall he looked so majestic as he looked down on me. When I think of him... I have "turning points" committed to memory... so today was just that... a day well spent with my friend.

And I will miss him dearly.
Adios!

A LIVING LOVE

If you ever love an animal, there are three days in your life you will always remember....
The first is a day, blessed with happiness, when you bring home your young new friend. You may have spent weeks deciding on a breed. You may have asked numerous opinions of many vets, or done long research in finding a breeder. Or, perhaps in a fleeting moment, you may have just chosen that silly looking mutt in a shelter--simple because something in its eyes reached your heart. But when you bring that chosen pet home,
and watch it explore, and claim its special place in your hall or front room--and when you feel it brush against you for the first time--it instills a feeling of pure love you will carry with you through the many years to come.

The second day will occur eight or nine or ten years later. It will be a day like any other. Routine and unexceptional. But, for a surprising instant, you will look at your longtime friend and see age where you once saw youth. You will see slow deliberate steps where you once saw energy. And you will see sleep when you once saw activity. So you will begin to adjust your friend's diet--and you may add a pill or two to his food. And you may feel a growing fear deep within yourself, which bodes of a coming emptiness. And you will feel this uneasy feeling, on and off, until the third day finally arrives.

And on this day--if your friend and God have not decided for you, then you will be faced with making a decision of your own--on behalf of your lifelong friend, and with the guidance of your own deepest Spirit. But whichever way your friend eventually leaves you--you will feel as long as a single star in the dark night.

If you are wise, you will let the tears flow as freely and as often as they must. And if you are typical, you will find that not many in your circle of family or friends will be able to understand your grief, or comfort you.

But if you are true to the love of the pet you cherished through the many joy-filled years, you may find that a soul--a bit smaller in size than your own--seems to walk with you, at times, during the lonely days to come.

And at moments when you least expect anything out of the ordinary to happen, you may feel something brush against your leg--very very lightly.

And looking down at the place where your dear, perhaps dearest, friend used to lay--you will remember those three significant days. The memory will most likely be painful, and leave an ache in your heart--As time passes the ache will come and go as if it has a life of its own.

You will both reject it and embrace it, and it may confuse you. If you reject it, it will depress you. If you embrace it, it will deepen you. Either way, it will still be an ache.

But there will be, I assure you, a fourth day when--along with the memory of your pet--and piercing through the heaviness in your heart--there will come a realization that belongs only to you. It will be as unique and strong as our relationship with each animal we have loved, and lost. This realization takes the form of a Living Love--like the heavenly scent of a rose that remains after the petals have wilted, this Love will remain and grow--and be there for us to remember. It is a love we have earned. It is the legacy our pets leave us when they go. And it is a gift we may keep with us as long as we live. It is a Love which is ours alone. And until we ourselves leave, perhaps to join our Beloved Pets--it is a Love we will always possess.

Hi Maria and Harold,

I'm sorry to hear Chile passed away. We've shared so many great
things together with our Vizslas. He left such a lasting legacy and all the
owners of his get should be proud. He was a rare dog who had it all and
truly was a triple champion. You have done so much with all of your dogs
and I'm proud to know you and want to thank you for Chile's impact on my
breeding.

Chile will be highly regarded for generations to come and I think that
in itself will be his most important contribution. He made all of us stop
and see the real potential of our own dogs. Thanks for sharing such a
loving beautiful dog :)

Always
Your Friend,

Thank you for telling me about Chile, Harold. I wrote you a previous
message but lost before it could be sent.

I know how very sad it is to not have Chile around, he was such a part of
your life for his very short life. I know that you are relieved that he
lived his life to the very last moment he could and you didn't have to make
any decisions about that. It just isn't fair that the nice dogs like Chile
don't live longer. His candle burned brightly for the time he was here.
You loved, spoiled and enjoyed him his entire life - he was a very lucky
dog.

You gave him a great life.

I know how sad you are going to be without him, it takes a very long time
to get over the sadness of their leaving.

I hope everything went well with the breeding of Vida, it will give you
both something to look forward to. So glad that Maria didn't drive to
Texas alone.

Take care, will talk to you soon.

Where to Bury a Dog
There are various places in which a dog may be buried.
I am thinking now of a Vizsla, whose coat was flame in the sunshine, and
who, so far as I am aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought.
This Vizsla is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam.
And at its proper season, the cherry tree strews petals on the green lawn of
his grave. Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub is an
excellent place to bury a dog.
Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed
at a flavorous bone, or lifted his head to challenge some strange intruder.
These are good places in life or in death.
Yet, it is a small matter, for if the dog be well remembered, if sometimes
he leaps through your dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling, laughing,
begging, it matters not at all where that dog sleeps.
On a hill where the wind is unrebuked, an the trees are roaring, or beside a
stream he knew in puppyhood, or somewhere in the flatness of a pasture lane
where most exhilarating cattle grazed, is all one to the dog, and all one to
you. And nothing is gained, nothing is lost if memory lives.
But, there is one place to bury a dog....If you bury him in this spot, he
will come to you when you call--come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of
death and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again.
And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel, they shall not growl at him
nor resent his coming, for he belongs there. People may laugh at you who
see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall...who hear no whimper,
people who never really had a dog. Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing.
The one best place to bury a dog is in the heart of his master.

I too am crying as I write this, it is so like Roper went too...just one

The Roo's ashes are on my dresser in the bedroom, with a chukar wing on top,

well at...just to continue his campaign.
Please know that my deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to both of you.

have a picture of Chile, at my first Nationals in Conn., running into the
ring with his stuffed chili peppers. A great dog with a great legacy.

My thoughts are with you,

Harold,

I really can't express what I feel for you and Maria. I knew him so briefly and I'll absolutely never forget him. I'll always remember our chanced meeting--. I was at the Mission Circuit two years ago with Jasper. I saw Melissa bringing a herd of red dogs in all together at one time. Later I saw you running Chile in agility--was I impressed! I thought he was the best looking and the best tempered red dog I'd ever seen. From then on I hoped we'd be fortunate enough to have one of his prodigy to spoil forever.

I'm so glad he had a peaceful departure. You're in our thoughts--sorry we can't be closer right now.

Hugs from us all--

Dear Maria,
My deepest sympathy at your loss of Chile. My friend just sent me news and his web page. I have been a fan of his for years now, and I'm deeply saddened to hear the news of him passing away. He was a dog that caught people's attention and always made an impression to all that saw him. I have a golden about the same age as Chile, so I often saw him show, while not nearly in his league.

My eyes still well up with tears anytime I think of a wonderful old Vizsla leaving this earth. Gunner and Sisza are too fresh in my mind. He was truly a wonderful dog, and a pleasure to have known.I am sure that he, Ruger, and Bourbon are comparing notes on times that they had here and people that they all knew. Hopefully the birds are plentiful, and whoever is doing the shooting for them is a good shot, and a loving forgiving handler.

Dear Maria and Harold,

My deepest heartfelt sympathy to both of you. I am actually going through a similar situation.

A week ago I was cleaning BUSZKE's teeth, and found a growth. After taking him to the Vet and having it removed. It was diagnosed as malignant Melenoma.

So far we have not been able to find out how far it has progressed. Lungs are clear, and bloodwork is due back today on the rest of his major organs.

He is 6 years old. The same age as CODY when I lost him. Cody was our first show dog and Buszke is our first Bred by Champion. Must be a trend.

I know how hard it is to lose a family member. I will always remember their achievements and companionship.

With tears running.

Out for now.

Hello to you all.. and to some of Chile's GSP friends as well:

By now you have read Harold's post about Chile and read that Chile died this afternoon - in his sleep. Some of you know that about 4 weeks ago Chile became ill - some of you don't.

On May 20 Chile had a low grade temperature…and she took him to the vet. We couldn't figure any reason for it. ... We left on the 22 for a dog show and came back on the 25th to a very ill dog. On the 26th x-rays revealed cancer.

Maria opted not to have tests done…but would have them done after he died. We didn't want to add any additional stress to the whole thing. With medication from the vet and some help from a few of you Chile was comfortable as possible.

At first it was so sad. We cried a lot and then we laughed a lot…thinking about all the Chile stories we had to tell.

He had a bad day last Thursday and then perked up by Friday…Vida had come in season…and he was flirting...although there were visible signs of pain.

Maria had to leave for Houston today. Vida was to be bred. I had asked if I should go stay with Chile…but she said no. Harold would be home early and her dad could look in on Chile. Her dad went by mid afternoon and Chile had died in his sleep. He had rabbit toy…that was just his…next to him.

Harold was called and came home immediately. Meanwhile Maria was still on the road. He waited until after she called
