Condolences
For Chile
The day Chile died,
June 18, 1998, Harold posted a note to the Vizsla List
that read:
- "Chile
passed away this afternoon. He died peacefully
during his
- afternoon
nap with his favorite toy, a stuffed rabbit next
to him."
The following notes are
posts via the internet we recieved as condolences on our
loss of Chile. It has taken me a long time to finally be
able to post these, but I wanted to share what others
said about Chile.
- Subject: Chile's passing

- So sorry to learn of
your loss of Chile. He was truly a great
ambassador
- of our breed. My
thoughts and prayers are with you. Time really
does
- heal. I am looking
forward to the day Chile is inducted into our VCA
hall
- of fame. I believe he
deserves this honor.

- I gasped out loud when I
read your post. I only saw Chile once, at the

when you did your dance with the hot peppers

champions. I *loved* his personality. He was such
a

imagine what you must be feeling right now, and

- Maria & Harold,
-
- We're so sorry to hear
about Chile. I can tell from your message that
- sending it was a very tough
thing to do, and I applaud your courage for
- doing it. Though I never
met Chile, I know he was a special dog and can
- never be replaced. I only
hope that you allow all of those who are thinking

share a little piece of your sadness so that we

- Subject: Maria and
Harold's Chile Bean
- From: Melissa Thomas
- Organization: TX

-
- By now you have read
Harold's post. Maria and Harold's Chile is gone
but his spirit remains so close.
-
- Three of my best friends
are sleeping quietly at my feet. Cooper is so
sensitive and is just a bit worried about me. He
has washed my face several times in the past
hour. Sandia and Amigo just seem to know that
it's time to be settled.
-
- Chile became sick about 4
weeks ago. Maria learned that he would have but
just a short time, and so I spent my Thursdays
driving up to visit with Maria and Chile
and
the rest of the gang. Each visit I found myself
memorizing every bit of him, and he returning my
quizzical expressions with, "it's
okay". One Thursday morning he chased
gophers, the following week we indulged ourself
with ice cream - he eating the cone first, and
last Thursday we went for a ride and just sat a
studied one another
lost in conversations
with Maria... remembering all the crazy exploits
we've shared.
-
- Maria and I have shared so
many things with Chile... his success in
obedience, the field, and agility; completing 12
AKC titles and earning 89 OTCh points. I can
remember the day he earned his 1st point and the
89th.. each was a Celebration! I remember popping
open the bottles of champagne when the MH was
completed and the jubilation of the MX last
summer. Chile had talent, and his teamwork and
devotion was shared by Maria; that inspired the
successes I have had with my Chile pups.
-
- Boy did he like to fish..
or at least he figured that's why we waded out
into the water. He thought all parks had gophers,
and it was his job to find them. He could make me
laugh and cry. Once he accidentally gave me a
horrific black eye! When it came to the "new
trainees" in the field
he _always_
pushed them hard... if one of the youngsters was
braced with him and wanted a bird.. they had to
get down to work and work hard!
-
- Last Thursday Maria asked
me to say goodbye to Chile. I just couldn't and
afterwards this is what I told her...I know that
you wanted me to say goodbye to Chile today. I
could not. He and I had a good talk/hug
but
I just can't say goodbye. Wouldn't you know it...
darn that little guy, true to his nature, had to
run down the hill to see me off. I know that you
really may not have wanted him trecking up and
down the hill
but he seemed to insist....he
knew I'd have a treat for him.
-
- It was extremely difficult
to see that he was the last dog to trot back up
the hill. Standing near the edge of the rock wall
he looked so majestic as he looked down on me.
When I think of him... I have "turning
points" committed to memory... so today was
just that... a day well spent with my friend.
-
- And I will miss him dearly.
- Adios!

- A LIVING LOVE
-
- If you ever love an
animal, there are three days in your life
you will always remember....
- The first is a day,
blessed with happiness, when you bring
home your young new friend. You may have
spent weeks deciding on a breed. You may
have asked numerous opinions of many
vets, or done long research in finding a
breeder. Or, perhaps in a fleeting
moment, you may have just chosen that
silly looking mutt in a shelter--simple
because something in its eyes reached
your heart. But when you bring that
chosen pet home,
- and watch it
explore, and claim its special place in
your hall or front room--and when you
feel it brush against you for the first
time--it instills a feeling of pure love
you will carry with you through the many
years to come.
-
- The second day will
occur eight or nine or ten years later.
It will be a day like any other. Routine
and unexceptional. But, for a surprising
instant, you will look at your longtime
friend and see age where you once saw
youth. You will see slow deliberate steps
where you once saw energy. And you will
see sleep when you once saw activity. So
you will begin to adjust your friend's
diet--and you may add a pill or two to
his food. And you may feel a growing fear
deep within yourself, which bodes of a
coming emptiness. And you will feel this
uneasy feeling, on and off, until the
third day finally arrives.
-
- And on this day--if
your friend and God have not decided for
you, then you will be faced with making a
decision of your own--on behalf of your
lifelong friend, and with the guidance of
your own deepest Spirit. But whichever
way your friend eventually leaves
you--you will feel as long as a single
star in the dark night.
-
- If you are wise,
you will let the tears flow as freely and
as often as they must. And if you are
typical, you will find that not many in
your circle of family or friends will be
able to understand your grief, or comfort
you.
-
- But if you are true
to the love of the pet you cherished
through the many joy-filled years, you
may find that a soul--a bit smaller in
size than your own--seems to walk with
you, at times, during the lonely days to
come.
-
- And at moments when
you least expect anything out of the
ordinary to happen, you may feel
something brush against your leg--very
very lightly.
-
- And looking down at
the place where your dear, perhaps
dearest, friend used to lay--you will
remember those three significant days.
The memory will most likely be painful,
and leave an ache in your heart--As time
passes the ache will come and go as if it
has a life of its own.
-
- You will both
reject it and embrace it, and it may
confuse you. If you reject it, it will
depress you. If you embrace it, it will
deepen you. Either way, it will still be
an ache.
-
- But there will be,
I assure you, a fourth day when--along
with the memory of your pet--and piercing
through the heaviness in your
heart--there will come a realization that
belongs only to you. It will be as unique
and strong as our relationship with each
animal we have loved, and lost. This
realization takes the form of a Living
Love--like the heavenly scent of a rose
that remains after the petals have
wilted, this Love will remain and
grow--and be there for us to remember. It
is a love we have earned. It is the
legacy our pets leave us when they go.
And it is a gift we may keep with us as
long as we live. It is a Love which is
ours alone. And until we ourselves leave,
perhaps to join our Beloved Pets--it is a
Love we will always possess.

Shong from the V list:
-
- Where to Bury a Dog
- There are various places in
which a dog may be buried.
- I am thinking now of a
Vizsla, whose coat was flame in the sunshine, and
- who, so far as I am aware,
never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought.
- This Vizsla is buried
beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden
loam.
- And at its proper season,
the cherry tree strews petals on the green lawn
of
- his grave. Beneath a cherry
tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub is an
- excellent place to bury a
dog.
- Beneath such trees, such
shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed
- at a flavorous bone, or
lifted his head to challenge some strange
intruder.
- These are good places in
life or in death.
- Yet, it is a small matter,
for if the dog be well remembered, if sometimes
- he leaps through your
dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling,
laughing,
- begging, it matters not at
all where that dog sleeps.
- On a hill where the wind is
unrebuked, an the trees are roaring, or beside a
- stream he knew in
puppyhood, or somewhere in the flatness of a
pasture lane
- where most exhilarating
cattle grazed, is all one to the dog, and all one
to
- you. And nothing is gained,
nothing is lost if memory lives.
- But, there is one place to
bury a dog....If you bury him in this spot, he
- will come to you when you
call--come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of
- death and down the
well-remembered path, and to your side again.
- And though you call a dozen
living dogs to heel, they shall not growl at him
- nor resent his coming, for
he belongs there. People may laugh at you who
- see no lightest blade of
grass bent by his footfall...who hear no whimper,
- people who never really had
a dog. Smile at them, for you shall know
- something that is hidden
from them, and which is well worth the knowing.
- The one best place to bury
a dog is in the heart of his master.

Chile on the V-list. I feel like I have lost a
good friend, and I cannot imagine your own
sorrow. Your web site was the very first V site I
found when I "searched" several years
ago, and I have enjoyed regular visits ever
since, even though I only hunt my v, Madison, for
wild birds and have absolutely no knowledge of
the show ring, agility tests, or the like. You
have been unimaginably generous with your time
and with sharing your V family with so many, and
I thank you for it. Ihope we will all meet with
Chile again someday across the Bridge.

- Dear Melissa,
-
- Your tribute to Chile was
so beautiful. The shock of his loss has been felt
very widely...tears are all too easily falling.
Chile has always been there at Nationals year
after year. The whole V community has watched him
as a young dog, then as a mature dog, then as a
beloved veteran. We have all loved seeing him
again and again. The thought that he is now in a
better place is still very difficult to accept.
-
- There are so few words that
can be said at this time...
-
- Thankfully his kids are
wonderful reminders of his gifts to the Vizsla
world.
-
- But there is nothing like
the original...never will be. Hugs to you. Jan

know how sorry I am about their losing Chile.

they want there to be a brief obituary in the

Chile Bean

- Hello to you all.. and to
some of Chile's GSP friends as well:
-
- By now you have read
Harold's post about Chile and read that Chile
died this afternoon - in his sleep. Some of you
know that about 4 weeks ago Chile became ill -
some of you don't.
-
- On May 20 Chile had a low
grade temperature
and she took him to the
vet. We couldn't figure any reason for it. ... We
left on the 22 for a dog show and came back on
the 25th to a very ill dog. On the 26th
x-rays revealed cancer.
-
- Maria opted not to have
tests done
but would have them done after he
died. We didn't want to add any additional stress
to the whole thing. With medication from the vet
and some help from a few of you Chile was
comfortable as possible.
-
- At first it was so sad. We
cried a lot and then we laughed a
lot
thinking about all the Chile stories we
had to tell.
-
- He had a bad day last
Thursday and then perked up by Friday
Vida
had come in season
and he was
flirting...although there were visible signs of
pain.
-
- Maria had to leave for
Houston today. Vida was to be bred. I had asked
if I should go stay with Chile
but she said
no. Harold would be home early and her dad could
look in on Chile. Her dad went by mid afternoon
and Chile had died in his sleep. He had rabbit
toy
that was just his
next to him.
-
- Harold was called and came
home immediately. Meanwhile Maria was still on
the road. He waited until after she called
