STUDIO EASEL KIT IN PINE, PRE-CUT: $195

Wallmount is a studio easel that hangs from the wall, taking almost no space when not in use, and that operates with great ease when in use. The Wallmount easel’s carriage is counterbalanced, which permits effortless position adjustment. Since there are no knobs or other complexities to adjust, you will be completely unaware of this easel as you concentrate, taking no time for easel adjustments. You will be surprised how much flexibility in painting this gives you.

We offer Wallmount solely as a kit. We take orders only by toll-free telephone and credit card, and do not sell through stores. Because you build it yourself and buy it direct from us, you will have state-of-the-art performance at amazing savings. Assembled in hardwood and sold through a retailer, our easel would easily cost over $1000.

Building the Wallmount easel is a satisfyingly easy do-it-yourself one-day project that uses just your drill-driver, a square and two small C-clamps. Everything else is supplied: all hardware, precut wood parts, and 20 lbs. of counterweights. Instructions are illustrated and well-tested, but we also have a free technical hotline for any questions. Ordering information and our guarantee are at the bottom of this web site.

Background to our Wall-Mounted Easels

Hi! My name is Prescott Behn and this easel is a copy of one I recently made for myself. My studio was in our gas-heated but un-insulated garage, which had become too costly to use in winter. The obvious solution was to move the studio into our unoccupied third bedroom, but there wasn’t room for my bulky oak easel and a bed for our guests. So I developed this easel that takes very little floor space and gets its stability from the wall itself. We save on garage heat, I have a warm studio, and we preserved our guest room. Even my wife thinks this is a fine solution. A good quality reducing lens has helped me get more distance on a painting whenever the room’s size has become a limitation.

This design has worked so well, that I’m now offering it for sale as a kit. The Wallmount is unbelievably easy to use. You don’t even think when you reposition a canvas. The carriage glides up and down with little effort and lets you concentrate on painting. Like my own, this kit-built easel hangs from the wall, and a weight counterbalances the carriage and canvas. The weight is easily adjustable, so the time to change canvas size is less than a minute. A brake holds the work wherever it is put.

When I set out to build my easel, the goal was to make it simple, solid and compact. In the end, that translated into: 1. wall mounting and elimination of back-structure, 2. its twin-mast design, which permits counterbalancing and a smooth-sliding carriage, and 3. pine (not oak) as the principal material which allows use of power-driven screws without drilling. The result is Wallmount’s unique combination of high utility and low cost. It saves lots of money, lots of floor space, and lots of aggravation. You don’t even think about it, but it helps you paint -- invisibly.

Hardwood vs. Softwood Easels

Oak is the traditional studio easel material. Traditional but not entirely rational. Most hardwoods are stronger than the conifers, but are also more costly and much more difficult to work. Softwoods include pine, hemlock, spruce, fir, and several others. These are used to build houses and almost everything else in our lives except easels and costly furniture. Unless you’re doing mural-sized paintings, your easel is asked to support less than 15 lbs., so we believe oak represents both overkill and overcost. (Anyone here own an oak house?) A non-hardwood easel that is designed properly can be just as solid and support paintings just as easily, while giving you a lifetime of use. Once you use your Wallmount, my guess is you will see many benefits, and any concerns you had will evaporate.

Our Guarantee

We will give you whatever guidance you need without charge as you build and use your easel. The Wallmount is simple as kits go, but if you are a novice with a drill-driver or a square, we ask you to please look carefully at the kit and its instructions before you start assembly, because we can accept return only of un-started kits in original condition. Please call us if you wish to make a return. Immediately upon receiving your kit in usable condition, we will refund your kit price minus a $20 fee for re-packaging. Return freight is your responsibility. Just call UPS.
