DRESS FOR SUCCESS

At ORLAND GRASSLAND

So, you've decided to take a walk on the wild side...jump into nature...volunteer!

Some things to think about before you jump in--

·         This is prairie grassland the way nature intended it...rockin' & rollin'!  The ground is uneven terrain-- no neat, little paths here!  There are two entrances that we use, both are narrow, overgrown farm roads.  To get the job done, we have to get off the roads and into the site, hiking over hill and dale.

THINK ABOUT WEARING GYM SHOES AND SOCKS OR HIKING BOOTS TO COVER AND SUPPORT YOUR FEET AND ANKLES.

·         We are proud of the animal and plant diversity that thrives in the grassland--complete with the scratchy brush, thorns, burs and insect nips.

NOT A GOOD PLACE FOR SHORTS AND TANK TOPS.  JEANS ARE BEST.

·         Best to save your animal attraction--and perfume--for another time!

NOT A GOOD IDEA TO COMPETE WITH THE FLOWERS FOR SWEET-SMELLING ATTENTION FROM BEES AND MOSQUITOS.  (A little bug spray wouldn't be a bad idea, though)

·         We thrive on working outdoors and in all the seasonal weather that goes with it.

BE PREPARED--LEAVE THE NICE CLOTHES AT HOME:  Hats and layers in the winter, mudproof footwear for the spring, and a hat with a visor in summer. The bonfires spit embers from time to time, and the bramble has been known to snag, so natural-fibered clothing works best here.

We're looking forward to seeing you, and we really want you to come back again.  These simple tips will help make your volunteer experience a little more comfortable.
