TAIKO
For hundreds of
years, people in Japan used the sacred taiko drum to drive away
evil spirits, bring rain and offer thanks for a bountiful crop,
and, in ancient times, to call warriors to gather and arm
themselves. As a taiko group in
the States, the members of Northwest Taiko use the power
of the drum combined with movement for a dynamic
form of expression.

Along with
drums, members of Northwest Taiko sing, dance, play fue (a Japanese
bamboo flute) and strike small metallic percussion instruments. Some works the group performs are
contemplative and religious; others are playful and
exuberant. Their extraordinary
performance
will leave your heart pounding!

From their
first show on the second story of a Seattle Japanese restaurant in
1984, Northwest Taiko has grown into one of the most exciting
performing groups in the Northwest.
Their numerous performances include appearances at
Bumbershoot, Northwest Folklife, the Seattle
Cherry Blossom Festival and Meany Hall.
They have also been warmly received in Canada,
Montana, and Oregon, as well as numerous cities across
Washington state.
Through
their performances, demonstrations and workshops, Northwest
Taiko
promotes a strong cultural awareness of Asian American culture.
