SHARE (Self Help And Resource Exchange) Food Co-operative Program

Bishop McNamara Council #1622 continues to sponsor our monthly "SHARE OF WASHINGTON" Food Co-operative Distribution Site.

We offer the "whole community" an opportunity to buy one to four "Shares" of food per family, with the only request being that they pledge to have provided one hour of any volunteer service to the community. There are no maximum income restrictions, ALL members of the community are welcome to purchase reduced-cost “shares”.

Each "share" is two grocery bags, worth over $30, which costs only $16.50. Food Stamps are accepted. The food is bought wholesale by the “Share of Washington” organization, and these savings are passed on due to the efforts of volunteers at the regional distribution sites (ours is in Hagerstown) and local centers run by community groups like ours. This food is NOT "surplus" food. Each share provides a generous mix of frozen meats, fresh vegetables and other staples.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Our SHARE site is open from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, normally on the morning of the 3^rd or 4th Saturday of each month.

First: Volunteers start packaging food at 7:50 am.

Secondly, we have a small team which picks up our bulk share food monthly at the regional distribution center in Hagerstown, and brings the food down to our distribution site in two vehicles.

Finally, we also have a two-person team which provides our required twice-yearly help at the Hagerstown regional distribution site.

Your prayers are requested for deceased member, Sir Knight Jim Dowell, shown on far right of photo, who was one of the founders of our Frederick SHARE site in 1995 and served as our principal SHARE coordinator for most of that period until his death in 2006.
