Happy 71st Birthday
To The King!

IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING!
WASHINGTON, DC – In early 1956,  local "hillbilly music" entrepreneur Connie B. Gay booked a young singer passing through Washington on the Wilson Line’s Potomac River excursion boat “The Mount Vernon” for a  moonlight dance cruise.*** The singer, described by syndicated columnist Dorothy Killgallen as a "devastating combination of Frankie Laine, Johnnie Ray, and Billy Daniels, " had ignited teenage audiences through his appearances on television and a just released single entitled "Heartbreak Hotel."
On Saturday, January 7, 2006, the spirit of that singer, Elvis Presley, returned on the 50th anniversary of his first appearance in Washington.
“Elvis Resurrected,” a dance party, was held in celebration of The King’s 71st Birthday at
Chick Hall’s Surf Club, DC’s “last honky tonk inside the Beltway.” A rockin’ evening of Elvis songs was performed by The Hula Monsters, known for their wide-ranging repertoire of Hawaiian swing, Rockabilly, Jazz and Country music. Longtime fans and novitiates payed homage by dressing in the “Elvis way.”  Prizes were awarded for the “Most Elvis Man” and “Most Elvis Woman.”  Mai Tais using a blend available from Time2Tiki.com were served up, mixed according to a recipe made famous by local Mai Tai Master David Chan, former owner of Alexandria’s Honolulu Restaurant.

Ted Smouse of Smouse Productions, Susan Slatery, along with Ruthie Logsdon (Ruthie and The Wranglers) and others, did a dynamite job of producing and promoting the event. The event decorations consisting of giant red lighted EP letters, posters galore, an Elvis Lamp to die for, and life-size Elvis cutout really put attendees in an 'Elvis Frame of Mind.'  In 2005, Ted, put on a well regarded Aloha Elvis birthday celebration, so one has to wonder what may be in store for 2007.
