On the way to the lodge: The trip to Stevens Lodge from the Sea-Tac Airport will take about two and a half hours.  Prior to 4:00 p.m., Richard will be loading and sorting the food.  The lodge will be open after 4:00 p.m., so you probably have time to do some sightseeing along the way.  Possible stops include:

1. Seattle’s REI flagship store has just about everything you can imagine for camping, climbing, and bicycling, including a climbing wall.
222 Yale Ave. North, Seattle, 206-223-1944, 888-873-1938  http://www.rei.com/stores/seattle/index.html
There is also an REI store next to Southcenter, near the airport, 240 Andover Park W, Tukwila, 206-248-1938.

2. Fred Meyer store in Monroe.  This is the last large general merchandise/grocery store before the lodge.  If you want special candy, snacks, or fruit drinks, this is the best spot to pick them up.  There are occasional mosquito “blooms” and if you have not brought repellant this is a good place to purchase it.  If you do not have two water bottles, you could get a liter of water just for the bottle.
18805 State Route 2, Monroe, 360-805-8100

4. Deception Falls is a roadside park beyond Skykomish that has a short nature trail through a patch of old-growth fir and hemlock and views of a waterfall on Deception Creek.  (The Iron Goat Trail itself does not have any old growth.)

5. Take a hike on the Iron Goat Trail. Turn off US 2 at milepost 55 onto the Old Cascade Highway, USFS Road #67. Drive 2.3 miles north to USFS Road #6710 and turn left. Drive 1.4 miles to the Martin creek trailhead.
